increase texture resolution?

Featured Replies

This is probably a bit of a noob question, but is there a way to enhance the resolution of an already made texture fitted to a model? For example, I wanted to paint some more of the KC-135 by PADG (I recent released two: Utah and Beale), but the resolution of the aircraft texture by default is quite grainy and looks poor when trying to add an insignia with a fair amount of detail. I use Gimp 2.6, DXT and thats about it. Thanks in advance.

FSX textures can be scaled up to 4096x4096 for FS9 1024x1024 is the maximum.2048x2048 is giving fairly good results , using 4096x4096 is quiet complicated.Simply blowing up existing textures always reduces their quality ( the same goes for scaling them down )In other words.By enlarging the textures their overall quality decreases and the same time we have more pixels to make detailed decals, logo`s etc.A complete redo of the texture on high resolution is the only way to achieve maximum quality. This means we need a new paintkit and at least new bump-files.Up or downscaling of existing textures is something to be avoided.I know there are painters painting on high resolutions ( like 4096x4096 ) and scaling them down to 1024x1024 , claiming a better result. They are simply mistaken. As we connot stretch nor crop a single pixel, the only resolution we can use is the one we have been painting on.Leen de Jager

Leen, thanks for the information. So if I understand right, a pixel is a set unit size, and enlarging the image/adding pixels wont necessarily fit the model right and there isnt a way of 'jamming' more pixels into a set area (10"X10") without enlarging the texture...thus leaving it up to the original developer to choose the size of texture map and resolution. Pitty...so many good models out there I'm eager to paint, but the resolution really reduces the detail level and overall appeal of the project.

No,no.You are (FSX spoken) free to use 512x512 , 1024x1024 , 2048x2048 or even 4096x4096.You can enlarge or shrink textures. The quality of scaled pictures however is worse than the original quality before scaling. In other words changing the size means a redo of the complete texture.Leen

Ah I see...I'm painting in FS9 and wouldn't mind trying to get a better resolution texture on a plane (Simshed C-130) for example. Would one just "enlarge the canvas" size to begin with?...if this type of thing even works with FS9 methods..
