"FS 2004 overwrites FS9.CFG" problem

Featured Replies

Hi!Please help:Everytime I start FS 2004 (German version) it will overwrite all settings (display, traffic, realism, ...) made in fs9.cfg. So I have to adjust them over and over again - everytime I start FS. This is getting tiresome! Everything else is working fine in FS.Who has a clue?ChrisWin XPAthlon 500Geforce 4 MX 440256 MB Ram

Make sure you exit FS2004 after you make the changes. If you have a fault/crash, fs2004 will revert to a default fs9.cfg if you didn't save it first. If that doesn't work, try exiting fs2004, open windows explorer to your fs9.cfg folder and make a copy and place in the same folder.Since you are using WinXP, check the different users accounts for different fs9.cfg files. If you made your changes in user1, those changes wouldn't be in user2 fs9.cfg file.W. Sieffert

Thanks for your hints!Problem is still here, though. I use only one xp-user for fs so no mix up possible here. When I set the read-only tag for fs9.cfg fs refuses to start up: "missing administrator rights" (transl.). I also exit fs after making changes and restart - with default fs9.cfg as the result.I suppose, there is something that makes fs9 think it crashed during the last session.Does FS keep a log file for such events like crashes etc...?

FS2004 does read/write to the FS9.cfg file each time you use FS2004. FS2002 and probably earlier MSFS do also read/write each time you use the flight simulator.Yours seems an interesting one. Which parameter's keep reverting, i.e., graphics, sound, weather, etc.? If graphics, it may be that FS2004 does not recognize your graphics adapter correctly. If graphics, I would try reinstalling the MOBOs controller chip drivers to ensure the CPU to GPU interface is correct. I would then reinstall DirectX9.0b and an updated graphics adapter driver. If the above is not the problem, try setting your system to an English (United States) under the Control Panel, Regional and Language Options to see if the problem is corrected. If not return to your choice.W. Sieffert

Hi folks,"FS2004 does read/write to the FS9.cfg file each time you use FS2004."It certainly does! When FS2004 starts up on my system, it accesses FS9.cfg 314 times (42,600 total file accesses at startup). When shut down immediately, with no changes, FS9.cfg is accessed 65 more times (19,696 additional file accesses at shutdown). The file access pattern at startup is quite different if there is no FS9.cfg available."I suppose, there is something that makes fs9 think it crashed during the last session."Since the sim updates the FS9.cfg file when closed normally, crashes will prevent this final update. I haven't checked to see if the file is updated immediately when settings are changed, but if they are not, then we should expect those changes to be lost.It is important to distinguish between the default version and the last one saved. Are all new settings lost, or just some?Stevewww.fs-traveler.com

Everything's lost everytime. It sets back to default f9.cfg. I also get the King School Intro Screen at startup. I am not sure if that is strange. Regarding crashes, I see absolutely no signs of fs shutting down prematurely. My fs9 behaves perfectly normally except that I have to reenter the config settings at startup.

It sounds to me like its not a problem with FS2004, but with XP, or rather how you have it setup. If you log in as a user to XP you may not have the rights to that directory to save the .cfg file. Try logging on as administrator to XP and that should take care of the problem. Also check that the directory is not marked as read only. If it is you won't be able to right back to the directory. However, it does sound like the user you are logged in under does not have rights to modify files in your FS directory.Steve Brown

Have you tried editing fs9.cfg manually to see if a changed setting is used? Are you able to edit and save the cfg file? This might help clarify the user rights issues. For example, iIf you add/change the following line in the MAIN section of your fs9.cfg file, the FPS display will include a few more fields at the top of your screen. (Shift-Z twice to show FPS) [MAIN]AVE_FRAME_RATE_DISPLAY=1This effect is easy to check. Then see if the change is still in the cfg file after you exit the sim. (If the line is already there, set the value back to 0, the default.)To see more file access details, try FileMon, available from: http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/filemon.shtmlThis enables you to watch all file acceses while the sim starts and ends. Edit the Filter to Include only fs9.cfg, and check both the Log Reads and Log Writes boxes. With a bit of experimenting, you can learn a lot with this utility.Steve

That's not it...I am always logged in as administrator. I have also modified and saved fs9.cfg directly in notepad. No problem. I even tried to set the "read-only" flag of fs9.cfg to prevent fs from overwriting it. Result: error message (missing administrator rights) during start-up. When the read-only flag is removed, fs starts up flawlessly.

thank you for the link! that might help me. I'll try that when I get home. However, I have edited fs9.cfg manually. e.g.: traffic density is 100 when I save it in notepadafter starting fs 2004 it is 0 again.

I've attached a text file with the first few entries in the log file with fs9.cfg present, and then missing. http://forums.avsim.com/user_files/48908.txtWhen fs9.cfg is present, the sim finds the file and continues processing. Line 8 reads the entire file (12604 bytes) into memory. When no fs9.cfg file is present, it appears to create an empty file. At Line 8 it closes the empty file. It then uses Explorer to look for another version/backup (???) to use. Eventually it builds a new one from scratch. This may help you interpret what you see on your own system. (Including whether it is looking in the correct folder, which may differ from mine, depending on your Windows version.)Steve
