November 26, 200322 yr A couple of weeks ago I downloaded the above panel by Mackem Greg from Avsim. One of its features is an autoland system. Tried it out last night, but I couldn't get the autoland to work - OK until 50 feet from the ground, then either the plane goes nose up, stalls and crashes, or it goes nose down and crashes into the runway. Has anyone been able to get it working properly? If so, can you tell me what I am doing wrong. All of the pre-conditions are there, I have throttle to zero and I have tried reducing fuel. I have a FF2 joystick (although obviously I am not using it) - don't know whether this is having an effect. Thanks for any help.Boogie.(Sorry about re-posting, just noticed the error in the subject title of my original post :-roll )
November 26, 200322 yr I'm not certain, but I believe that pilots disconnect the a/p at 50ft agl anyway and the aircraft settles onto the runway under the pilot's control - already trimmed appropriately etc by the a/p. Maybe "greg" programmed it that way. Try disconnecting the a/p at 50 ft agl and just flare slightly a few feet above the runway.Adam
November 26, 200322 yr Thanks for the input. I can always disconnect, but the autoland is meant to take the plane to a full stop. In any event, it disengages the autopilot at 50 feet. Here is an extract from the readme:Auto Land version 2.Following pre-conditions are assumed:1. Your are heading towards an ILS-slope with at least 10 nm left to the airport. Your heading should not differ more than +-40 degrees from the runway.2. You have tuned the ILS-frequency on Nav1-radio.3. You have an altitude of at least 2000 ft above ground.4. Your speed is not above 250 kt.When aboved stated preconditions are fulfilled, you simply click at the gauge and everything will be set.In short, the following happens:1. ILS-approach mode is selected.2. Speed is reduced.3. Flaps are extended. At radio-altitude 1500 ft:4. Speed is reduced once again.5. Flaps extended to maximum.6. Gear is lowered.7. Landing lights on8. Spoilers armed. At radio-altitude 50 ft:9. AP and auto-throttle is disengaged. At touch-down:10. Full brakes applied.11. Flaps retracted. At full stop:12. Spoilers disengaged.13. The gauge is resetted.Obviously if I disconnect at 50 feet, steps 9 to 13 will not occur.Maybe I'll just have to practice manual landings...Boogie.
November 27, 200322 yr Hi guys,I'm using Greg's great 737 panel too!For me, it doesn't make any fun out of fs if everything is gonna be "auto" right ? !Well, for landing, I engaged both AT to set my final approach speed at 140 using flap 30 most of time as I usually ended my flight with fuel between 5%-10%.At 400ft, I disengaged AT, at between 200-300ft I disengaged AP and hold the stick downwards to counter attack the pitch-up force and my b737 will just head toward runway and flare and touch down perfectly!Try it, is the best feeling to have a perfect landing....I called it "real-life" landing as I always try to fly my fs9 as real as the real world does!
November 27, 200322 yr Thanks - I'll give that a try.In any event, I'm wondering whether autoland is supposed to be fully automatic - if I take control of the stick when the autopilot cuts out at 50'agl, I can get a pretty good landing anyway.Boogie.
November 28, 200322 yr Hi Boogie,Well, the fs2004's auto pilot is somehow behaves differently from fs2002.In fs2002, I can land without holding down the yoke to prevet pitch-up when AP is disengaged even at the final approach speed as low as 115 kias, but not in fs2004! But again, it adds a real feeling of landing!Happy Flying then!...for you....Happy Semi-auto landing will do just fine!
November 28, 200322 yr Author Not sure about his plane but a real 737 can certainly full autoland and flare without need to disconnect the A/T (this happens 3 seconds after touchdown on a dual autoland) and IS on the PMDG's NG (PMDG's A/P is not using the default MS autopilot). If you are just guessing your Vref for landing, then I would go much slower on approach like 130@ flaps 30. In the real world you must disconnect the A/P by 50 AGL on a SINGLE autoland and flare manually but on a dual landing it will land itself and is also "as real as it gets".....
