Photoscenery ; which program makes the smallest bgl files ?

Featured Replies

Hi all,Up to now I am using FsEarthTiles for making photoscenery. It is working very nicely , but I find that it makes rather large bgl files.Eg : Aerosoft released the whole of Germany in 1m/p and that took 55 Gb incl autogen and custom objects. FSET would use up to 400 Gb for that. And 102 Gb in 2 m/p. ( I found out that the Est download size x 3 is about the size the scenery will be. )Today I made Paris and surrounding in 1 m/p ( after having seen Paris HD from France VFR )and it looks the same.I also took a look at Corsica HD which was 3.0 Gb in size. When I would use FSET that would takeappr 7 Gb.Which program can do this and makes smaller scenery files ?Thanks in advance.

It all gets processed through the Resample compiler, which is a part of the SDKs. What will make a considerable difference in file size is compression or not using compression. Going at 100% compression is just a good excuse for BIG FILES. Making a BGL at 95% or 90% or 85% compression settings will create much smaller files with little to no loss in visual enjoyment. The setting for compression level is part of an INF file, which Resample uses to create BGL files. If there is no line for Compression then Resample will use 100%, IIRC.

Thanks for the answer. There is an entry for the compression, so I could change that." FS default is 100%. Some like 80 better to generate smaller bgl's on cost of the quality "Before trying : any idea how much smaller a scenery will be with compression set to 90 ?

I found a small area that I just checked. At 100% it was 146kb, 90%=76kb and 85%=50kb. Did I mention it was a smallish area? But somewhere in the 85 to 90% compression range you will see a reduction of over 50% in file size. Whether there is any loss of visual quality is up to each individual, I guess? I don't see much, if any and I can assure you that I look very, very closely. :(

Many thanks Meshman !This makes photo scenery design much easier for me !

Additional :To see the quality difference between 100% and 80% compression I recompiled the Paris HD files again and then compaired the 2 at several places in FSX.I did not see any quality difference ; framerate stayed also the same. For me 80% will be the value I am going to work with. Those bgl files are 4x smaller.
