Laptop dilemma

Recommended Posts

Hi,The misses requested me to dump my dell desktop for a new laptop (less cablage in the living room :-))...Reading through a number of forums I understand that running FSX on a laptop could be tricky, but unfortunately I don't have 2000 € to spare on a top-line Alienware. So for the moment here in Belgium I have 2 rigs on my scope:First,a Comline Pro Gamer (from a local store)17,3" ( 1920 x1080 ) LED I7-2630 (2.0 ~ 2.9GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 6MB L3 cache) nVidia GTX 460 1.5 GB DDR5 8 GB DDR3 500GB 7200RPM@ 1699€ (2403,99 USD)or second,a Dell XPS 1717,3" (1600x900) WLED HDI7-2720QM (2.2 ~ 3.3Ghz)nVidia GT 555M 3GB 6 GB DDR31TB (2x500GB) 7200RPM@ 1354,05€ (1915 USD)So, from what I understand of this, the choice is between a better processor (I7 2720QM or I72630) or a better video card (nVidia GTX460 or nVidia GT 555M). Could any of you laptop gamers out there share some advice as to what is most important here. Or even, if running FSX on any of these setups could be a rewarding experience? Thanks in advance!Nico

There won't be a huge difference in CPU performance between the two models you've listed, however, given FSX's CPU-bound nature you're better off going with the fastest CPU you can afford, especially since it's a laptop and upgrading won't be an option (or at least not a guaranteed option). That being said, the first system with the slower CPU does have a GPU that's likely to be a fair bit faster than the other, depending on whether the GPU in the second system uses DDR3 or GDDR5 (surprisingly GDDR5 model GT555M GPUs are actually *slower* than DDR3 models). It's really a toss-up. If you can verify that the GT555M uses DDR3 rather than GDDR5 you'll likely be better off with the Dell (and save some money too!)

Hey, thanks for the advice. The GT555M indeed uses DDR3.So I guess the decision is made then! :-)grtz,Stroman
