December 18, 200322 yr I hope I'm in the right forum for this. It would be interesting to know how many FS simmers went into the Century of Flight today and flew the Wright Brothers flight at Kitty Hawk. I went so far I ditched into the ocean. Did anyone else do that? The way I see it, we owe it to Orville and Wilbur.
December 18, 200322 yr I don't now how you did it. I've got all my realism settings maxed out and I haven't gotten much farther than their best attempt of the day. I get behind the wing dip/yaw curve and then lose the bird in a wing down collision with the ground. If you made it all the way to the ocean, then you're either pretty darn talented, or I'm a worse pilot than I thought!! :+ Congrats!
December 18, 200322 yr I did it and got pretty far. The only problem I experience is that the flyer is incapable of climbing over 100 feet. Therefore, I can't get over houses and I'm forced to find a way between them. I think the real flyer was capable of maintaining a climbing attitude, so either the simulation is not right, or the simulation is so good that the density altitude at kittyhawk yesterday prevented me from climbing. I read in a book about the Wright brothers that they tried flying their flyer next summer and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't fly. They didn't realise they had just discovered the effect of density alitude. Guess the flyer must have been on the edge of flying/non flying so any change in weather might keep it on the ground.
December 18, 200322 yr I also did it. I got much further than the last marker representing the max distance the Wrights achieved that day. I also ran into the problem of not being able to climb over houses or trees.
December 18, 200322 yr I flew it, only bearly getting past the tiny river at the end of the airport :-lol. That thing is the hardest plane to fly, amazing I even went that far.You must of had a gentle touch on the stick getting to the ocean like that :).
December 18, 200322 yr MetamartyYou must have a turbocharged version!! - I cant get much better than 25 ft altitude.Sheer distance straight and level at about 10-15 ft is no problem as long as nothing is in the way and I don't have to make any turns with more than about 10 degrees of bank, anything over that and the " inner" wing stalls and we crash. For straight and level flight, once I have got off the ground it will continue almost " hands off" needing only featherlight touches to keep going .All realism settings etc are at max.Dave
December 18, 200322 yr You're probably right about the height not getting over 25 feet. It's hard to tell, but I can't get the plane over the tree tops, so I guess 25 feet is closer than 100 feet. Seems like the plane won't get out of ground effect.
December 18, 200322 yr You're right, guys, I never get over 25 feet off the ground, either. I have to steer through the houses, too.I don't really know how I get that far, guys, but it's not the first time I've done it, though it was the farthest time yesterday. You do need a feather touch on the joystick, though. One time I tried banking over the beach to stay over land. No deal, it stalled. So I can't bank it hardly any, either. I wonder if the longer flight results from the setup you have in your PC. I don't know. Or the joystick? I wouldn't think so, though.
December 19, 200322 yr As hard as the FS version is to fly I don't think it's has hard as the real thing was. In the sim all you have to do is wiggle your wrist. From what I've seen of the replicas you've gotta be a cross between a highwire walker and a belly dancer to keep that thing going. The first time I tried it I managed double the distance of their first flight, all realism at 100% of course. The big thing seems to be to stay in ground effect and god damm don't turn.....;-)Overall I'd say that the balance between who was flying who in mt case was no better the 50/50.Tony
