O/T: how to email big files via outlook?

Featured Replies

hi everyone and merry christmas to you, My apologies if this is the wrong forum ...i know i can send almost any kind of file through email as an attachment but some files are just too big to make sending them via email practical ....if i need to send someone a really big file like an avi or mpeg file , how can i do it? i would appreciate any advice. thx ...HENRY CYXT

Try zipping the file, sending it over a Messenger program, or if you have some webspace, upload it there.

Most email servers will have limits on how big an email message can be. Most are not more than a few megs. Alright for sending a few pictures but not a video file. To send something bigger you will need another method like ftp or with an instant message program which allows direct file transfers. Hope that helps.Oh and don't bother zipping. Zip is not going to be able to compress your video very much if it already is a compressed format. You could use Winrar to split it up into several smaller parts however.

The best way is to upload the file to some free website and then just email the link for download and viewing.

hi guy's appreciate your advice .... now bigshot when you talk about free website what do you mean? can you point me one out ?thx againhenry

I read that info on TechTV, can this be done with Outlook?

I set up an FTP server on my computer, so people can send me big files. It's also where I host my own FS files, since my website doesn't have a lot of room (only 100MB). This was the reason I started my server - the cost of additional webspace is ridiculous for those of us who don't use a lot of bandwidth. My web sevice provider charges an extra $10.00 per month for every 100MB of space I need. After I set up an FTP server on my computer, I had a virtually unlimited amount of space, for free.If you have to transfer some big files, send me an email and I can let you use my server for a short time.- Martin

>I read that info on TechTV, can this be done with Outlook?< Not that I know of. However, if you stay up to date on Windows Updates or upgrade to MS Internet Explorer 6 you will have Outlook Express. It is considered to be more stable and less prone to attack than Outlook. It's all free except for your time.http://www.outlookexpression.com/oe/download/default.asp

I have been user of Outlook for a long time and probably wont switch, but I set up an FTP tonight, and it works pretty good, definetly easy for big files.

Look up this site:-http://www.sofotex.com/download/FTP_Software/Ftp_Servers/Download/install Cerebus FTP server - it's pretty good; File Transfer Protocol is the fastest way to send files of any size. You can zip them first if you wish. You may want to disable the "anonymous" user, and specify a particular users or users - with good passwording. regards,pj
