December 28, 200322 yr Hi folks, I've usually avoided the default Baron, Mooney and some other aircraft because they seem slow. The Baron, for instance will only do 130 kts IAS at 25 inches MP and 2500 RPM at 3000 msl, and the Mooney 136 at 37"/2400rpm. These ac are supposed to be much faster, around 200 kts IAS. I've been messing around in AC cfg files and discovered a section called (Flight tuning) (square brackets). In this section there is a setting called parasite_drag_scalar, set at 2.5. I've been playing with this setting and found that if it is reduced, more realistic speeds can be had. My present settin for the Baron and Mooney is .8, which gives an ias of 194 for the Baron and 195 for the Mooney at same power setting as before. This may be unrealistic, but so is a 130kt Baron 58. Had to exit the sim and restart before changes became effective. I alson changed the setting in Bjorn Buchner's beautiful Mitsubishi Mu-2 which now does a much more realistic, to me, at least, 245kts ias at torque of 65%, rpm 85%. JamesJ
December 28, 200322 yr Sorry, but the original default settings from Microsoft for this section are all set to 1.0 .So for most of us this should not be an issue...Just my 2 CtsJean-claude
December 28, 200322 yr Sorry, Jeane-claude you are right, that's the case with me,also, for the default..it was the Mu-2 which was set at 2.5. However, reducing that setting to .8 increased the speed as described..JamesJ

JamesJ You must be doing something wrong. I just tried this, in the default Baron @ 3000ft, cruise setting of 23" MP and 2300RPM I got 172IAS and 178TAS. In the default Mooney @ 3000ft with cruise setting of 32" MP and 2300RPM I got about 155IAS and 160TAS. Are you sre you're raising the gear and flaps after takeoff?
December 29, 200322 yr ... and leaning the mixture correctly? My `standard` Mooney will touch 200 knots at 12,500 feet, where it is designed to fly. According to the book, that's right.Like the previous poster said, are you sure you're not doing something wrong? Playing with the parasite drag can lead to unreasonably high approach speeds, incorrect fuel consumption and all-round amatuer meddlers weirdness.Allcott
December 29, 200322 yr I certainly haven't noticed any "meddler's weirdness", haven't flown long enough to check fuel consumption. I can't see what I could be doing wrong, I am raising flaps and gear, mixture is set on automatic. Is anyone else out there getting 173 Kts at normal cruise power? At 3000 msl an incorrect mixture setting surely wouldn't have that great an effect anyway, would it? I was an air traffic controller for many years (27 years in Atlanta Center) and have seen a lot of Mooneys and Barons go by, always doing 180 or better, Mu-2s 220 to 240..JamesJ
December 29, 200322 yr Your recollections must be incorrect, at least at 3,000ft!http://www.mooneypilots.com/M20M%20Evaluat...%20-%20M20M.htmNice speed chart there. 120 KIAS is what you see - and what you get in FS. As the model is the one in FS9, I think we may regard those numbers as authoritative!I suggest you put the parasite drag back to where it was as you will have decreased fuel consumption to an unrealistic level. The MS FS default Bravo is probably the closest of all the default aircraft to the actual numbers of the real world plane. The Cessna's all need some improvement, I don't think many would disagree there, but the Mooney - it's about right as it is. If you want to go faster, fly higher!Allcott
December 30, 200322 yr You need to look more closely at the graph, sir, the 120 kts ias is during a 1000 fpm rate of climb. Another graph just down the page shows 157 ias at 10,000. The only way the default Mooney in my version of FS9 could do 157 kts ias is in about a 1000 fpm descent..JamesJ
December 30, 200322 yr I still say you're either doing something wrong, or something is messed up with your FS. Try reinstalling. Using the power settings on that page, I get very close performance numbers to the real aircraft.
