January 4, 200422 yr Hi folks, since i recently started some VFR flying i have q question for you: what should a pilot do after landing deny from tower "airport is under IFR"? Other than ignore, of course....Further, what's the best way for knowing in advance which is the correct landing runway? Without ATIS :-(Thanks in advanceLuigi ;-)
January 4, 200422 yr Its not a dumb question at all!Im a Pilot in Australia and use Airservices Australia's NAIPS online pilot service. It gives up to date location and area Briefings worldwide. The only problem is you need to Hold an Australian pilots ARN lic number to use this service.Perhaps there is another online site for anyone to use! This kinda service is only good for preflight as weather changes minute by minute so you still need to check atis or overfly the airfied before landing and etc,...The screen shot attached gives a briefing for YSSY ( Sydney Intl ) at tells us APCH: EXP INDEPENDENT VISUAL APCH RWY: 34L AND R FOR ARRS AND DEPS OPR INFO: PARL RWY OPS IN PROG. INDEPENDENT DEPARTURES IN PROG
January 4, 200422 yr Author In real life, you wouldn't land without an IFR clearence at a towered airport. In MSFS ---------- anything goes, such as ignoring. I regularly fly the F-16 (Kirk Olsson's) at 20,000' VFR without an IFR clearence too! :)For the correct runway, you can contact other aircraft, the FBO, fly over the airport to look at the windsock, or perhaps look at smoke, etc. When there is light or no wind, airports might specify preferred runways in airport directories. You look up all that "info" beforehand, as well as carry some of the information with you, since you'll need to know traffic patterns/altitude & frequencies.L.Adamson
January 4, 200422 yr Normally IRL if the airport doesn't have ATIS, ASOS or AWOS, and you can't get anybody to answer at the FBO, you overfly it 500-1000ft above pattern altitude to check the windsock. In FS the windsock hard to see from the air, so I "cheat." When I get down to pattern altitude about 5-10 miles from the airport, I hit SHIFT-Z to see the winds.Sometimes if you're on the CTAF frequency you can catch another aircraft landing and know what runway is in use ahead of time.Use the runway that gives you the most headwind. So if the airport has RWY 17 and 35, and the winds are 140@15, you will land on RWY 17.
