Birmingham, AL Airport by Talonsim

Featured Replies

I was curious as to whether anyone has this Birmingham Shuttlesworth Aiport by Talonsim and cares to comment on it. The price is right at $15 and adds a nice short hop flight from KATL. The one thing I noticed from the limited screenshots is that the scenery appears to perhaps have some of the flickering issues seen in most of the Imaginesim airports. Can anyone comment as to this scenery and performance? Athough the product is very inexpensive, I have found myself unistalling many addonslately due to the massive amount of programs i have installed into FSX. That said, it makes sense going forward to only purchase addons that i am relatively certain I will use for a while. Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers, Pete

No feedback for you regarding Birmingham Airport but just a tip which you may or may not be aware of regarding the uninstallation of programs. In most cases you do not need to uninstall a program, just disable the program in the Scenery Library. When you are ready to use it again, it will save you a lot of time by simply going into the Library and enabling it. The program I have found taking up the most of your system resources when running FSX is any commercial AI program such as MyTrafficX. FSX has to load all the worldwide aircraft and flight plans and that takes up a lot of resources even if the AI slider is set to less than 50%. This happens no matter where you are flying. The appropriate scenery will load depending on the area you will be flying so it will take less resources. For the flickering issues in Imaginesim airports, sometimes clamping the Negative bias (LOD) in the Display driver settings will reduce or eliminate the flickering. Best regards,Jim

Thanks Jim; I didn't realize that simply unchecking the scenery in the scenery libary would accompish that. I have only uninstalled aircraft so far (that I rarely fly) so this will be helpful with the less than regularly used scenery. I will try your suggestion to reduce the flickering; thanks again for your help! Cheers, Pete

For aircraft you do not fly very often, instead of uninstalling many people simply make a new folder called Hangar and then move the aircraft they do not fly often to that folder. When they want to fly that aircraft again, they simply move the aircraft back into the FSX aircraft folder. You should not do this with any of the default aircraft though as many aircraft use default gauges, sound, etc., and, if they are not there, the sim will crash. If you have the Nvidia video card, open up the Nvidia control panel (right click your desktop and select Nvidia Control Panel, select the Program Settings Tab and then FSX in item 1. In Item 2 (specify the settings) scroll down to Texture filtering - Negative LOD bias. The default is 'Allow'. Change this setting to Clamp. This has worked for me as I had flickering fences surrounding the airport and flickering light poles, etc., and clamping this setting almost completely eliminated the flickering. I do not own the ATI card but would think they have a similar setting in their driver settings. Best regards,Jim

I have an Nvidia card as well and did change that LOD setting to clamp. I will definitely use your idea about creating the hangar folder. Funny you mentioned the default aircraft; a couple of years ago i deleted many of them and quickly learned that was a bad idea! Cheers, Pete
