Crashing 9800XT

Featured Replies

HiI have mentioned this problem before, but it is worse. I have installed an Asus 9800XT G/card mainly to improve performance with FS2004. After running for around 15 minutes it freezes then crashes. Every time I reboot I get this error message:-'Computer restarted after an unexpected shutdown, Microfoft Windows detected a possible device failure. The driver for the display was unable to complete a drawing operation. Please check with the device manufacturer for a driver update. The display driver for RADEON 9800XT seams to be responsible for the system instability.'Does anyone have the answer to resolve my problem? I am using the Catalist 3.10 driverThanksBob WrightP4 2:53Asus 9800XT Graphics Card40GB Maxtor 7200 HDCrucial 2 = 512M (1024MB) RAM 333/2700DDRAudigy 9700 SoundSamsung Syncmaster 957 19" Monitor.Asus P4S8X Mobo

Hi , Bob.I guess that maybe your problem would be the SIS chipset from your ASUS, not the 9800XT. But everything is possible. I have read a lot of problems from this chipset and ATI anf other VGA with 8X. Better look at http://www.rage3d.com ,go the forums and search, maybe you

The ASUS P4S8X motherboard is known to be unstable when operating with electrically demanding video cards like the Radeons. I

In addition to the other responses, and often overlooked, might be the PC power supply. If yours is only 300 watts, it could be marginal after things heat up. For modern graphics cards and other "stuff" in your PC, I would recommend no less than 400 or 420 watts of power.Larry S.

Same thing..I have a 9800xt on asus p4s800, and afer a few calls to ATI this past week, we narrowed to a timeing issue most likly with the SIS chip agp bus (have had several calls like this). Kept getting intermitant vpu recoveries. It is stable if you run the AGP at 4x in the board bios. You'll only loose about 2% performance. You should be able to run everything else at normal...ram, cpu speed. I found the culpret with elimination. I thought of getting a ABit board ...$100 and reformat for best results...but even the ATI rep thought might be overkill for 2%. Also....I would turn on VPU recovery in the card desktop settings...will save hard crahes and freezing. Most time you will have to restart...but I have not had a single problem once agp set to 4X. Bummer...but she does work great, with ony a few hundred points less in 3d mark, and not much difference in FS2004 at all. Better then crashing.

I have a 420watt supply and voltages are good. It's the SIS chip. I also upgraded from a ti4600.....but that was 4x agp, not 8x. Run it at 4x, and you'll be ok. Of couse..no guarentees...but that's what did it for me.Good luck.
