January 22, 200422 yr In trying to methodically isolate the cause for the message, "Your computer has run out of memory..." etc., several posts suggest looking at the scenery.dat folder as a process of elimination to determine what file(s) might be the culprit.I would like to know if a scenery file that is added to the Addon Scenry folder automatically uses more system RAM, even if you are not flying in that particular scenery locale? Example: I have a scenery file for LAS loaded in the Addon Scenery folder and activated for use, but I am flying over New England. ThanksChris
January 22, 200422 yr ChrisAs far as I'm aware, scenery you're not actually using i.e. LAX scenery if you're flying in over JFK, will not load until you go to the LAX area. In other words, it is not eating memory until you use it.You might check whether you have 'cache scenery' checked and in what capacity. That facility saves recently used scenery to save it all loading up again next time you use it. I don't cache it at all, as I am always going to different places; unchecking it just might help. But the bottom line is that I think your problem is elsewhere i.e. too many other processes running somewhere in the background. Look in "Task Manager" (CTRL/ALT/DEL in Windows XP) to see what else is going on. Unless you are using a real dinosaur of a rig with small Memory RAM (with Windows XP and FS you need at least 512MB) then I don't think FS is your problem. I have 1000 aircraft, thousands of gauges and 150 add-on sceneries and have no memory problem even on my old workhorse.Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumonthttp://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg _________________________ Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumont VP Fleet, DC-3 Airways Team Member, MAAM-SIM
January 22, 200422 yr Thanks Mark.I do not have the cache scenery box checked. My rig is a 1.4 AMD running 768MB of RAM on XP. I use End-it-All before loading FS and have reviewed running processes through a tweak found via blackviper.com. I have tried using the page file feature setting min and max to 1920. As a last resort yesterday, I ordered another 256mb of RAM to bring me up to a gig. Really don't know where to turn from here. The memory CTD's come around about 45 to 60 minutes into a flight. Would any addon's in the "Effects" folder contribute to an additional draw on system RAM or would that just be when an effect is called for by FS9? Chris
January 22, 200422 yr 'Effects' files can cause a momentary stutter (so I'm told, doesn't happen to me) but I don't believe they put any real load on your memory as such.I don't think your new 256MB will be wasted but I don't think it's the answer (although it may, indeed, solve the problem as such!). I have a 1.8GHZ P4 with 512MB RAM and still use a GeForce 2 64MB card. I have no memory problems such as you describe which is why I'm inclined to the view that it's something else out there hogging your CPU.Have you tried looking at Windows Task Manager as I suggested? If you do, you should see exactly what processes are using CPU and memory and in what quantities.Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumonthttp://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg _________________________ Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumont VP Fleet, DC-3 Airways Team Member, MAAM-SIM
January 22, 200422 yr Howdy Chris,Just a suggestion, but are all your scenery LandClass files located in your FS SceneryBaseScenery folder? Sometimes authors leave LC files in their scenery folder without realising they should be placed in the aforementioned location. This LC placement is known to be one cause for memory leaks.
January 22, 200422 yr Cap Havoc:I recently removed the FS Genesis Beta landclass for FS2K2 that I had installed in FS9, through the add/remove folder in the control panel. It was the only specific landclass file that I was using, or at least that I'm aware of. I will check to see what is residing in the Scenery/Base/scenery folder, for now you have me wondering!ThanksChris
January 22, 200422 yr Howdy,And all your add on sceneries, too. Usually (but not always), the .bgl file is suffixed with an *_LC
January 22, 200422 yr Scenery caching is only used when you run from CD (a minimal install). Most people (here anyway) install everything to the hard drive.
