winds

Hi all,I'd just like to ask about winds aloft in FS2004. Am I correct in saying that they are randomly generated? if they are, how can I check what they are going to be (size and direction). It's a great pain when it comes to using FSbuild because I can't take into account winds and the fuel loads are always a bit thin. i'm away until sunday so if I don't reply, please don't think that I am being rude.CheersRic

If you're talking about the downloaded weather then no, they are not random. You can see the current forcast winds aloft for the US here:http://aviationweather.gov/products/nws/fdwinds/The winds aloft forcasts are updated every six hours, so what FS downloads is porbably what you'll see on that page. Winds aloft are given in true north, but I believe FS converts them to magnetic.

Thanks. As my pc currently does not have internet access (give it a few months, long story!!!) no I do not mean downloaded weather. I mean the offline dynamic weather. I use PMDGs 737 and I always see a headwind (I usually fly west)and there seems no way to read what FS is gonna throw at me exept in flight on the ND of the plane, when its too late!Cheers

You know that there's a jetstream of about 300 knots winds blowing from west to east at high altitude?

Hi Ric,I used the "internal" weather for the first time today. I've been using the downloaded weather but tired of the squirrelly aloft winds. So, I started with the "Fair weather" theme and modified it to mimic todays weather at both ends of my route but left the middle untouched for good sight-seeing, then flew from KBOS to KLAS. I too noticed the west-to-east wind at altitude at around 25 knots. I found this to be quite realistic since the prevailing wind is in that direction. It impacts the real-world airlines too. For example, the SWA scheduled flights from KSAT to KLAS are listed as taking 20 minutes longer than flights from KLAS to KSAT. So fly the return half of your route and you'll make up that lost time.
