which layer / or item has to be used to have open windows in a repaint ?

as the title says...i am trying to get open windows in my new repaint, but it does not seems to work.... what layer or what part of a layer has to be deleted, or un-ticked..... i am using adobe photoshop cs5many thanksmarc
