N1 + VNAV?

Recommended Posts

There's something I noticed during climb-out with the 737 NGX.This "problem" was on the previous 737 NG and can be still found within the 737 NGX (even with SP1 installed). After take-off in N1 + LVL CHG mode I select VNAV when the flaps are fully retracted. The FMA says then N1 + VNAV / LNAV path. This does not correspond with the MCP however, because the N1 button is not illuminated, only the VNAV and LNAV buttons. Is this going to be fixed within a new update?PH-XRE

Hello, I would like to address you on a first name basis, unfortunately you did not sign your post. This does not need fixing. The N1 you see in the FMA refers to the autothrottle engaged mode. Whenever climbing out in vnav the autothrottle will be engaged in N1 mode which will be displayed in the outer "box" of the FMA.This was taken from the FCOM 4.20.6N1 – the autothrottle maintains thrust at the selected N1 limit displayed on the thrust mode display, including full go-around N1 limit.

PH-XRE,it's a common misunderstanding that the green lights on the buttons in the MCP indicate that the corresponding auto flight mode is selected. What a green light actually indicates is that the corresponding mode can be cancelled by pushing the button again. This is not the case for N1 mode, so the button does not light up. The same behavior is seen, for example, for the APP button -- again, the button does not light up (and this has come up in more than one forum thread). This may be confusing, but it's the way Boeing decided the 737 MCP should work. The FMA is the place to look to determine which modes are active.Martin Boehme
