Questions for Eddie Denney...

Featured Replies

Mr. Denney,I have RealScene US Mesh for FS2002. I liked it. (Paste tense because I no longer use FS2002.) But I did have some problems with it. Mostly with objects in the air... mostly around my GeoRender3 (Diamond Point) scenery but not exclusively. As I remember Honolulu was real bad this way. And of course the plateaued airports (especially Sea-Tac).I have read the comments you have made recently in this forum. I am encouraged but still have some concerns. I don't mind plunking down another 40 bucks if I have some comfort that the FS2004 stuff will play nice with Sea-Tac and maybe Jeffco... nicer anyway.I am even more concerned about the GeoRender series. I now have both GR3 & GR5 (Forks)... I intend to buy some more of that series and Emma Field which should be out for FS2004 very soon now.Do you have any idea if Lago's GR & EF will work better with RealScene for FS2004 than what I experienced in FS2002 and GR3? How about Hawaii? (Meaning MS's default Hawaii.) Are there any GRs that you know do not play well with RS for 04? Ones that I should avoid purchasing if I intend to use RS for 2004?I now live in Colorado but I was born & raised in Tacoma Washington. I find it hard to get a perspective on your screenshots of Tacoma. If that is supposed to be the Tacoma Waterway in the lower left then McKinley Hill would seem to be missing in action? A few larger, better quality, screenshots would be very nice... some that include Sea-Tac would be very, very, nice!I am not trying to desparage your product... I want to love it... but I have to justify buying it first... justify it to myself that is. ;-)Any information/screenshots you can provide which will help me arrive at a decision would be much appreciated. :)

Hey Tom.Why not use the Realscene that you were using with FS2002 in FS2004COF?I am using it in both FS2K2 and COF. In COF, there are fewer floating trees using the mesh than in FS2K2.Personally, I'm not going to buy the newer version since the original version is working out just fine in FS2004.The terrain mesh looks great in COF.Scott :-)ATP/CFII - KCOSColorado Springs

Hi Tom,I am not familiar with GR, so I am not sure how it will function with RealScene 2004. I will say that the Washington state area is much better than it was in the last version. In the last version I used the new SRTM mesh for the first time and the elevations were off. In this version I used the USGS NED data, and everything seems to sit better with it. All of the U.S. is made from 30 meter source data in this version, and landclass is included for the lower 48 states. I basically started from scratch and remade all of the mesh from the USGS National Elevation Dataset. There will still be some plateaued airports because FS2004 still uses flat runways, where in real life many runways have elevation differences from one end to the other. Since the data is more accurate in this version, I have noticed a lot less mismatching of elevations than in FS2002. Most of the plateaued runways I am seeing are actually level with the elevation at some point and may be elevated at the other end due to sloping terrain around the airport. Jeffco is like this. The west end perfectly matches the elevation, where the east end has a slight plateau. I hope this helps in your decision.Eddie

Hi Tom:if you wonder about the SeaTac area you can probably get a good preview of RS by downloading Steve Greenwood's free 38-m mesh files for the Seattle area: fst-wa-st-30m10.zip. They were made from the exact same data (18 months ago!) so unless one of the designers "messed up" with the positional placement they should be identical. Just search for Steve's name in the library. In general, don't expect any improvements on the well-known problems with add-on mesh, such as raised or sunken lakes and airfields, cliffs along shorelines, etc. It's not just the fact that the FS runways are flat, they are also often slightly misplaced. Also, MS adjusted the lake elevations to best fit the default mesh, which is why they end up on plateaus or in trenches. To date, none of the payware providers (and only a few freeware designers) have dealt with these issues, even though we have the knowledge and tools to do at least some of the adjustments. Instead, we now have at least three US payware meshes that differ only in minor details, like packaging. Pretty boring state of the "competition", if you ask me ;-)Cheers, Holger

Scott,Colorado Springs huh? We are nearly neighbors! :-lolYou make a good point but I want to see what the landclass stuff will do for me. Plus Eddie tells me that the 2004 stuff is much more accurate. Thanks for the suggestion.

Holger,Good suggestion. Eddie was kind enough to send me some screenshots. Among them was a non-plateaued Sea-Tac. The only plateaued one in the shots was Jeffco... and it actually is pleateaued some in real life... not that much... but some. In addition the stock MS mesh is off center with the resevoir... the water is spilling over the side... Eddie's version seems to cure that. I do believe that I will place an order for RealScene US Mesh & Landclass 2004!Thanks for the comeback! :)

Eddie,Thank you for the response. Also the e-mail and the screenshots. Things do in fact look to be much improved over the 2002 version. I will most likely place an order this evening... if I can get custody of the credit card from my wife that is! ;-)I do appreciate your assistance! :-sun1
