Still Water Reflections in FS2006?

Featured Replies

Just thinking ahead.....looking at Frank's Hangar and the picture on his home page, I was wondering how long it would be before MS had a go at simulating those mirror reflections you get in still water. It would be like an upside down view, a shade darker and a few white 'brushstrokes' accross the reflecting section of the view. I guess the distortion from the wake would be a bit more of a programming challenge, and the shifting view would require some geometric view coding. Just imagine though, what those bush sceneries would look like say at dawn as you took off in your amphibian and saw the sunrise reflected in the water! Sublime!

I'd be very dissapointed if that wasn't in FS2006. By then, videocards will be more than powerful enough and it shouldn't be that hard to implement using HLSL.It might even be possible at some point to "hack" the FS2004 shader programs and change them for your own, but that depends on how much Microsoft is ready to give away or how much programmers can find out on their own.

Well, it has already been done, e.g. "real" water reflections have been available since Comanche 4. Check out the screenies at http://www.novalogic.com/games.asp?GameKey=JOTR#ss-Daniel
