Yet another newbie question

Featured Replies

Hi all.Haven't flown a flight sim since MSFS98. Picked up COF & WOW, a lot has changed. I'm trying to sort through all the new stuff & down loads available to enhance the terrain & scenery.Simple question I think: I know what the meshes do (there are some great ones avalable, thanks to the authors) but I'm confused on the difference between the scenery add on's & landclass add on's. Scenery is pretty self explanitory so what is a landclass? Can someone elaborate on this for me?TIAJim

Land class data could also be described as "land usage" data. FS uses a grid made of 1km squares for the entire world that describes what the predominate land type is within each grid square (for example, urban, crop and town, forest, swamp, etc.) There are many different classifications. FS then uses this data to determine which terrain texture to use for each 1km square. (And since terrain textures also dictate the type of autogen, land class can have a *big* impact on the look and feel of scenery.)Land class add-ons replace, and in most cases update, the default FS data. This has the greatest impact in areas that have changed radically over the past few years. For example, an area that was mostly farmland a few years ago might not look right if, in the real world, it's been converted to suburban housing. Land-class updates enable you to create an environment that more closely matches real life (or helps create a fictional area, if that's what you desire.)I hope that helps explain.BTW, I'm curious as to why '04 is the last version since '98 you've decided to purchase. What was it about '00 and '02 that made you decide not to get them. (Not that that's bad--it's just interesting to know why some of rush out the second a new version is released and why others take a more elisurely approach to upgrades.)

Thank you.Why the abscence? Married in 97 (honeymoon for the first year, no time for flying!)Took up R/C planes in 98 & still enjoying that hobby quite a lot ( 5 planes in my hanger with a 6th almost ready for its maiden flight). Then got involved in on-line sim racing with the Nascar series by Papyrus for the last 2 years. What peaked my interest again was when on a business trip to NJ from PA (where I live) my drive took my right under the approach path into Newark airport. I almost caused 2 accidents watching the "big birds" on final! So here I am again!
