Tutorial #2 Issues near LOWI

Featured Replies

Thanks Ryan for your challenging LOWI approach tutorial. My Questions:1. At page 0.00.118 "Select Runway 08" I am lost however. In the FMC LOWI ARRIVALS page I select RW 08, so far so good. On the left side there are only Stars however. I don't get the 'Select LSK 3L to copy RW08 and then press LSK 1L to enter a direct to'. I must do something wrong.2. I could make several good landings and go arounds when leaving the RW026 setup in the FMC. The route to the holding pattern at RTTNB is clearly shown in blue on the ND. At 400' AGL I enabled the autopilot and voilá, piece of cake. So why changing to RW08?3. At page 0.00.120 I have to turn off both FD's just before the turn. Why is that? Seems not very handy to me in case of a go around.May be my FMC a very special one and foresees what I want to do.... :( ?!Please help.

Edward,1. There's a step that I accidentally omitted - you need to go back to the LEGS page first to do the direct to intercept.2. You could of course land on Runway 26, but the circle to land on Runway 8 is a real procedure used at LOWI all the time (it's famous in fact) and I wanted to show it just because it's difficult and something a lot of simmers who just do straight in landings or autolands likely haven't done before.3. The FDs are turned off before a visual approach, this is standard procedure. You don't want pilots accidentally using guidance from them that may not be accurate. If you press TOGA to do a go-around with the FD's off, the FD bars will still come up in what's known as "pop-up" mode (even with the switches off) to provide go around guidance.

Thanks Ryan for your quick explanation. I will try things out again. With respect to my second question: I indeed flew the famous RW08 approach and go around but with the RW26 setup. In fact at ABSAM the 230 degr. course is on the ND as a blue dotted line even without applying the fixes you described. The same applies for the go around course and holding pattern at RTTNB.So my question still stands, why should I enter RW08 etc. after ABSAM?Regards,

The blue lines are actually the missed approach procedure for Runway 26 - since they're not meant for what we're doing with the Runway 8 visual, you don't want to follow those just out of principle. This a visual approach after all, the fix page stuff that gets set up during the descent are the situational awareness guidance, not the missed approach track for the opposite runway. The RW08 inputting is done for a couple reasons: 1. It gives you an extended runway centerline out to infinity to use when you're in that tight turn.2. It declutters the ND by removing the Runway 26 missed approach lines.3. In the real airplane doing this would also load the Runway 8 missed approach procedure. Navigraph's navdata for simming doesn't have it unfortunately.
