100 or 200 extra Mhz worth the shot?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I wonder if pushing my cpu to 4.8 or 4.9 GHz is worth to make fsx run smoother or get better fps?? My system specs in my signature, temperature is not an issue, under full prime95 stress test it hovers the 70C mark.

4.7GHz is a fine overclock. You won't notice a couple of hundred more MHz. You might see a tiny difference if you were logging FPS, but I very much doubt you'd notice it yourself. While there are people who are doing 5GHz, you'll find most of them are having to dump ~1.5 V into the chip to get there, and a lot of people, me included, wouldn't be comfortable running it like that outside of benchmarking.

Indeed, not good news. 1.456 for 4.9GHz and only 2-3fps increase. Downclocking!!!!

Yep. I found the same thing when I was working out the overclock on my 860. Going from 3.8GHz to 4GHz required more than a proportional jump in voltage, and therefore heat, and I figured it wasn't worth it. People tend to place too much value on getting to a nice 'round' number like 4GHz or 5GHz, when it really won't make a difference in the real world.

Cheers,

Mike
