FS2004 J3 Cub not real on takeoff trys. How fix?

Featured Replies

Hi,I have flown a real J3 Cub and it is a kinda puppy dog on takeoff as long as you feed in a little right rudder and hod the tail down initially until time for & speed for tail comimg up. The one in FS2004 goes wild on takeoff roll with big groundloop tendencies regardless of attitude trys. (I get stall warnings even if I hold the attitude right.) Other prop tail draggers act much better including even the Extra 300 and an inported P51 and a Scout. I have realisim set high and all the others behave except the cub. What parameters can I set in its config file to make it right? I played with P-factor and torque settings in realisim. I hate to set realisim to way easy cause this isin't right for an old real plane pilot.Help,Larry Costa

"I hate to set realisim to way easy cause this isin't right for an old real plane pilot."I wouldn't worry. For example, I just recently purchased the RealAir SF-260 and they actually recommend you only set p-factor to two thirds at most, not to 100% "realistic". I think FSD International also recommend you turn down the p-factor and other settings when using some of their addons. The whole reasoning of selecting "Easy" or "Realistic" in FS is flawed - they assume that realistic automatically means "hard" and "easy" means it has to be unrealistic. I have very little real-life experience but I actually find the more realistic addon planes from Flight1, RealAir and FSD easier to land than some of the defaults - with the default C182 I'm all over the place, especially in the pitch axis and subsuquently also airspeed. With the SF-260, which has a much higher approach speed and is generally supposed to be more dificult to fly than a C182, I made a very smooth landing almost on the centerline on the first try.I have been flying the default Cub a bit and with some practice it's possible to take off and land. I still can't do touch and go's though - when I apply power after landing it almost instantly groundloops. If you notice it's starting to go out of control just kill the engiine and try to stop, then try again - it's completely impossible to recover. Also, try to hold the tail down as long as possible (longer than you would in the real one).I think there's a freeware Cub in the file library - might be worth checking out. It's probably better than default. Also there's the Maule (available in taildragger configuration). Freeware at fsnordic.net. Also check out the RealAir Scout and Decathlong - supposed have very realistic ground handling.

Some months ago there was a 1% airfile package available for the Cub and Comet. I tried the Cub file and it was much more realistic than the FS9 stock airfile.I know the file isn't at Avsim or Flightsim, but a Google search might yield something.Good luck,Greg

I'm not a real pilot but I just tried a test flight from Heathrow to check it out and apart from having to keep wings level with the stick and/or rudder I did not have to adjust the pitch at all and forwards or backwards movement of the stick was minimal compared with for example what the Cessnas require. It climbed at full power (2400rpm) at a steady 79mph all the way to 1000ft without touching anything. No stalling problems or other things as you described. My settings are always at full realism. Have you tried setting up a new flight from the menu because if you are saving and loading a previous setup you might have some setting or other that is afecting the flight?

I just did a search in the Avsim library for piper cub and found 3 pages of stuff. On the second page about halfway down I spotted FS2004 Original Aircraft Classic Piper by Lynn and Bill Lyons. I downloaded it to make sure it was still available and will give it a look later on. It apparently comes in 4 versions all with virtual cockpits. Might be worth searching and downloading for comparison purposes.

Thanks a bunch Charie and Gregg. I hit several aircraft to download. The J3 Cup is improved somewhat. Stumbled on the L4A Civil Airr Patrol version and its a honey. Also found Aronica and a few other taildraggers that fly well. I can use the original cub if I accellerate very slowly to takoff and let it fly itself off. Landing has not been a problem and even get away with some touch & goes. The Extra 300 isw my favorite airplane if realisim is set way up. It will snap roll (a real test for any hot airplane) real well. It spins great too. I am not into transport types and will work on IFR stuff cause I'm really way behind that. Thanks agin fellows - Happy flyingLarry

Don't even bother with the stock. Get the Lyons Classic Cub package. It was originally payware and was well worth the price, but now is free, so not the usual freeware junk.
