May 26, 200422 yr Hi all,It is a donationware flight planning and Moving Map application for both Windows PC and PocketPC. It is for real world pilots but looks pretty good as a FS utility. I hooked it up to a second PC and ended up getting a slick moving map display. I used Pete D's GPSOUT utility to emulate a GPS device. For my test I started out at North Central in RI and headed to Boston in the stock 172. The moving map worked fine and it even poped up a message saying I would be entering Boston's ATC in 5mins and gave me the freq to tune Boston ATC.I've only played around a little bit so far but it looks like it has a lot of features for flight planning etc. What it won't do is send a flight plan to FS.It also doesn't work on Win98.During the setup you have to down load maps and nav data which takes a l...o...n...g time.I tried, (am trying), to get maps for the whole USA. I started the setup and download of maps at around 10pm Tuesday and was only at 60% when I left for work at 7:30am today. The nav data download took about 2 hours to complete and I still have the tarrian download to do.For the record I have a broadband connection. The site did recommand only to download the areas you would be flying from and to for quicker downloads.Maybe I should have taken that advice. If you want to check it out the site is www.pocketfms.comAlso for the record, I have nothing to do with these folks and stumbled agross their site yesterday while I was looking for moving maps that I could use with FS.Jon
May 26, 200422 yr Hi Jon!Can you give more details on how you hooked it up on a second PC? I'm planning to install it on a laptop I have and fly on the desktop glancing at the moving map on the laptop...CheersMarcelo
May 26, 200422 yr This is exactly what I have been looking for....except for my Palm Pilot ;) Thanks for the find.
May 26, 200422 yr Hi,You have to connect the serial ports of each PC to each other. I have an old port-to-port cable I had gotten years ago. I think that it is called a NULL modem cable but I could be wrong. I think an old Lap Link serial cable would also work.AnywayI connected up the two PCs via their serial ports and I installed Pete Darson
May 30, 200422 yr Struggling with this guys. I'm not getting any obvious connection.Serial to serial cable (although with gender changers at both ends as I didn't have the right cable).Com 1, 4800 baud on the GPSOut.iniNot sure exactly what there is to set up on Pocket FMS.Any other ideas? Any other blow by blow set up guides would be mucho appreciated.Richard
May 31, 200422 yr Author Hi, Richard. You need to have a Null modem connection, connect pin 2-3, 3-2, 5-5.Start Pocket FMS.Start Fs9 with GPS Out in Window mode.Enable GPS in Pocket FMS. I did not use with Pocket FMS, but I did use it with other Moving Map software. I will try it later today and post results. I do use it with an eTrex and IPaq and it works fine. TV
June 1, 200422 yr Author Hi, Richard.I can confirm a problem with FS9 and PocketFMS. It does not work on my system. I will try to see if a direct GPS to COM1 will help. It seems that PocketGPS cannot share the Com port with any other app. TV
June 1, 200422 yr Author Hi.I was able to confirm that PocketFMS has a problem with sharing the COM ports with other apps. in the same computer with multiple Com ports.I created a Simulated flight plan in my Aviation GPS (KSNA-KFUL-KLGB) and connected it to my COM1 port, with Pocket FMS running, when I enabled GPS, (GPS Receiver On, Sim aircraft turns Black), and it started following the GPS input, see pic. This is a shortcoming of the PocketFMS and it is my hope that it will be resolved before the final release, it is still in the Beta mode.It should also work with another computer using the main system as a GPS/ FS9 with GPSOut, connected with the Null modem cable to your second computer running PocketFMS utility. I may write to the author and advise them of this short coming, not being able for other utilities to use another Com port on the same computer with multiple Com ports. There is no reason that I can see why it could not be done, it may take another way of detecting the Com ports on their part. TV
