July 8, 201213 yr G'day all, just noticed a new Vraptor has been released, a 500GB with a 64mb cache. The 600GB version I was considering has only 32mb cache. This is going to be my FSX drive, is there any reason going with the 64mb cache? this is the new 500GB drive http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=210_344&products_id=20544 and the 600GB http://www.scorptec.com.au/computer/37171-wd6000hlhx cheers
July 8, 201213 yr The old 600GB comes with 3 200GB platters The new 250GB & 500GB models' platters are 250GB while the 1TB model, 3 x 333GB platters. That's where the extra performance comes from: the more capacity of the platters, the more data density and hence the faster the drives are
July 8, 201213 yr The new 250GB & 500GB models' platters are 250GB while the 1TB model, 3 x 333GB platters. All the new ones use 333GB platters according to Anand: "Platter density is now up to 333GB (3 platters for the 1TB drive, 2 for the 500GB drive and 1 for the 250GB)." I have the 1TB model and it is really fast for beeing a regular HDD. Sure, it's not totally silent, but it is a lot quieter than my Raptor X that's inside a sound damping enclosure. Haven't had any previous Velociraptor before, so I can't comment on the sound compared to them. Oh, and if you get one, remember that they use Advanced Format (4K Sectors), so you need to downloaddrivers if you are to install any windows pre 7 SP1 on it. It will allow installation to start but when it's time to finish the installation it'll start complaining.

Obviously only the 1TB drive sports 333GB platters. 500GB / 2 platters = 250GB each platter. http://geektech.ie/index.php/review-western-digital-velociraptor-1tb/
