June 7, 200421 yr I need some help in placing the OM and MM for the Kai Tak RWY 13. I have an approach chart which says that they are 3.6 NM appart and you should be at 1716 AGL at the OM. What I'm hoping is that someone knows at what coordinates they should be placed, if I can get the MM placed it's no problem placing the OM. So far I can sort of place the MM at 114 10E and 22 20N, but it's not really exact. So if anyone has some information I would very much appreciate it.Thanks-Mikkel
June 7, 200421 yr Just now, I don't have time to look myself, Mikkel, but dig into my Kai Tak pages and I think, from memory, that you'll find what you need. My FS2000 page, particularly, has lots of charts linked I think.FS2004 www.swiremariners.com/cathayhk.htmlFS2002 www.swiremariners.com/cxkaitak.htmlFS2000 www.swiremariners.com/flysma.htmlGood luck! June 8, 200421 yr I'll have a look, if you find it though I would be very thankful...I really want to try this approach. I did a quick scan of your pages and I have found some approach charts. Funny enough I also found some dynamic scenry that worked with fs9 although it was written for fs2000. It adds dynamic planes leaving and arriving at the airport. Very cool to just sit at the airport and watch them arrive the way you see it in pictures and videos.
June 8, 200421 yr Mark,I haven't been able to place the markers yet, maybe you could look through your charts and see if you are able to see where they are supposed to be. I'm a member of CPA virtual but unable to log into their forum to ask this question. Do you know anybody there that could allow me to post a question there?Thanks-Mikke
June 8, 200421 yr I've spent the last several days at his website just getting intrigued about Hong Kong with all his material and sources. I used to fly into old Kai Tak on business every month for a year (sort of commuting), but it was before I discovered flight simming (rats!, if only I knew then). The dynamic scenery file works really good considering it was designed for FS2000. I wonder if one can update the aircraft with PAI or AI Aardvark>Mark, if your out there, has anyone been able to use an AFCAD2 file with Hong Kong 2004? I can sort of get right but the AI aircraft are sunken about 10 feet into the ground. Learning about how to match up different airport elevations but not having much success.
June 8, 200421 yr Yea, isn't it fun watching the planes come in.As you might already know I'm working on a afcad, but there is no way to make the AI come in the way the dynamic planes do. I have tried to add some flightplans from the Retro AI Group and it works pretty good. The problem with the elevation is that you have to set the runway and the airport elevation to zero...the way the default airport is or you will have what you are getting.-Mikkel
June 8, 200421 yr Are you saying that the AFCAD2 airport has to be set to 0.00 elevation or the Hong Kong 2004 airport needs to be set to 0.00 elevation?
June 8, 200421 yr I was talking about the default Kai Tak airport. Usually though, it's a good idea to have all the scenery the same height. Let me give you an example. I tried to elevate the Kai Tak airport to 15 ft. cause that's what is written on the charts, but because of the underlying mesh, which was set at 0 ft. and I can't alter that, the runways would float 15 ft. up despite I even changed both the runway and airport elevation in the afcad...so I had to lower it to 0 ft.
June 8, 200421 yr So What I think I am heqr is JabBGL works for changing heights in "default" airports but not with 3rd-party airports? If yes, that would explain why I have hit a dead end...
June 8, 200421 yr I'm not sure I undestand your question, but if you are asking if afcad only works for default airports that's not true, they work for all airports.
June 10, 200421 yr Hi Paragon,Spent the last several days working out/learning about airport elevations/AFCAD/JABbgl. Finally solved my issue. What I see I forgot to mention was I was trying to match airport elevations using Hong Kong 2004. Finally got it!!!!I too need to redesign the AFCAD to match up with HK2004's layout as default and HK2004 do not matchup at all. I take it you are craeating an AFCAD for the default airport?I luv the dynamic AI coming in into land. Considering its era is FS2000 - looks pretty good. But again it doesn't line up with HK2004 so I am gonna try and track down the author. (next little project). It's fun putting the old Kai Tak "back in business. ;)
June 10, 200421 yr Looking forward to whatever you come up with! I don't use the Hong Kong payware stuff myself, I just don't happen to like it, and as you know Thomas Kwong's FS2002 stuff works pretty well in FS2004; plus Roger Mole has done a version. Downside is both of those are pretty heavy on FPS.I share your enjoyment of that marvellous dynamic traffic, though. He's the only chap who has ever created the correct track for arrival at R13. As far as I know, that kind of sharp curved approach is not possible with AFCAD, is it?I've just been to his site again and have grabbed his AFCADs for Japanese airports, so will check them out.Good luck!Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumonthttp://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg _________________________ Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumont VP Fleet, DC-3 Airways Team Member, MAAM-SIM
June 10, 200421 yr I did try out a couple of Kai Tak sceneries, but I quickly deleted them as my framerates went to single digits! I have seen screenshots of the "new" offering from flightsoft, I think, but I must say that it looks awful...urgh.I find it very interesting that tracks made for fs2000 works in fs9, and it looks very real the way they arrive. I tried adding AI from the retro ai group but there's no way to make them arrive that way, so I deleted it again.-Mikkel
June 10, 200421 yr Yea, I know what your saying about HK2004. There is a lot of the "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" with that scenery. The mesh needs to be updated, however it is a more realistic lush green than the default with 76m terrain mesh added... too brown. Also on approach looking down at the repeated checkerboard textures looks FS98ish, water too light blue, VHHH is a disaster, etc., etc.But it does have its good points: It has for me the best frame rates out there among all the add on sceneries for Kai Tak. I can get double digits with all sliders maxed, 100% AI. Granted, it's only 10FPS! But when I move everything down a notch it's pretty smooth. Their buildings are the best out there for immersion feeling (flying in at dusk... All lit up.. WoW! Gotta get some snapshots when I'm done. They just need to update/redo/patch and they could open up a whole new market on it. But short of Thomas Kwong's amazing VHHH airport, all the add-ons have their issues too. When I finish I plan to make a video on yet another version of landing at Kai Tak. With a different viewpoint.I did discover that you can drop in scenery overriding HK2004 by moving up the priorty in the scenery list. So I have Kwongs VHHH in there instead of HK2004's. But as you probably know no way to override the spikey terrain mesh.ALso made two AI traffic .bgls - one if I want VHHH open and two, if I want VHHX open. I can switch back & forth. What else.. oh yes a couple a questions for you guys:1. - Do you know where I can get my hands on a good Kai Tak Aircraft Parking Chart? Using a .bmp photo of one which is kinda fuzzy when printed which says its from the Civil Aviation Dept of Hong Kong.. Tried their site but mostly in Manderin I think. Any sites? Leads?2. - Mark, Do you know who was the author for the dynamic scenery download file you have at your site? I don't this the other files created with FS Traffic will work. I own the new FSE which says you can still make AI tracks so that is another avenue I am investigating.Oh well... blew a lot of hot exhaust here. Time to go back to workin on that AFCAD. Will show you results when done.
June 10, 200421 yr There's a PDF on Mark's site called vhhhasir.pdf...I think it's on the fs2000 page, it has all the stand numbers and locations.-Mikkel
