FS9 172SP performance vs real life

Featured Replies

Greetings one and all.... I have recently started flying lessons to obtain my private pilots lesson. After 6 years of flying and maintaining sims for Flightsafety Int I decided it was time to get the real thing.I fly out of Heber City, Utah (beautiful valley set in the mountains, 50 miles east of KSLC). Our field elevation is 5630ft MSL, and I fly a 1999 Cessna 172SP. Here's the situation, nice day, temp approx 80F, winds from the south, 5 - 8 mph. On the real aircraft I am easily able to maintain 2400 - 2500 RPM on the climb out at 75kts and average 500 - 700fpm. At an altitude of 7500ft MSL I can level off, speed up to 100kts and pull the throttle back to 2200 - 2300 RPM to maintain the speed. I don't get that kind of performance at all from the default or RealAir Cessna. On the climb out I can get 2200 RPM max once the speed starts to build up but trying to climb out at 75kts is impossible unless I keep it at 100fpm on the VSI. Like the default cessna the real aircraft I fly is a 180HP, fixed pitch prop. I have tried to recreate the exact weather conditions, temp, winds etc and get nowhere near the real life performance.Things that make you go....Hmmmmmmmmmm.Anybody have similiar performance?????? Or do you get better?Interested in hearing from any real world pilots on your thoughts and experiences.ThanksDave

I'm just reloading the sim & aircraft to a new HD, and can't give a definate answer,But I too have trained at Heber in both props & gliders, not to mention flown in Russ's P-51 :), and know the area. The first question is FS9's mixture control. I always lean it for any flights out of KSLC, and of course Heber. It kind of jumps in 1000' increments, with 6000' being critical for simulated engine performance. Thats a good place to start. Other than that, you can always figure that planes don't perform the same........ to a degree. Even if they're both Cessnas.BTW---- Tues AM, I'm taking a Diamond DA40-180 up through Parley's, over Heber & down through Provo Canyon & back to U-42. This is beautiful mountain flying, especially below the peaks of Timpanogos. Pic: Heber-McDonald (36U) & Mt. Timpanogos in the background.edit: PS ---- the default RealAir is putting two 120 lb passengers in the backseat.

I have my mixture set to automatic..... I'll change it and see. That should be a beautiful flight. If you know the area, I just moved from Salt Lake to Timber Lakes just east of Heber. OK3 Air is having a BBQ this 4th..... decided to take the family there for some food and hanger flying.I work for flightsafety in Salt Lake, give me a shout here at my email addy.Dave

I have the same performance with the "RealAir" 172SP. Any way of removing the 2 rear passengers?

Good luck in training for your PPLA piece of advice (you prob already know this): get your written exam out of the way as soon as possible :)Then you can focus 100% on your flying and groundschool lessons!

That's a beautiful flight in the autumn, going around the backside of Timp and Sundance there. The east facing slopes of the Wasatch down in Utah County are always brightly colored in the fall.
