November 15, 201213 yr I think most of us at some time have used edits / tweaks to our FSX.CFG files from either/both ******* and Word Not Allowed ( both have added much to our experiences in FSX). I have for the past year used an FSX.CFG file that I had tweaked by the on-line service that ******* offers (and still does). Of course, a lot can happen to one of these files over the course of a year, including unwanted or incorrect entries made by the system in response to add-ons, etc. My system with this older file was exhibiting random pauses, so I decided to rename it and build a new file from scratch, then make Word Not Allowed’s edits / tweaks. I am now seeing a totally different issue, with fps being consistently lower, but no or little random pauses and stutters, which is good. Also now seeing delays in the textures being drawn when in complex and dense scenery areas. I have also since installed a water-cooler (I’m amazed how much cooler the CPU runs, even without OC). My plan is this coming weekend to start an OC, don’t know how far I will go yet J. CPU is an i-7 2700K, 8MB RAM PC-12800. I also plan to soon replace my video card from a current GTX460 to either a GTX-580i or GTX 680 (still working out which one to get). So, I ma soon to make some hardware changes that might (I hope) rectify this. Here’s my question- my original file has, in [bufferpools}, the statement RT=131072. Looking at threads here, just having a value for RT is the same as also having “BP=1”. My understanding of the significance of that is that the data stream from the CPU to the GPU is throttled down, by buffering occurring in the CPU. My new file (thanks to Word Not Allowed) has [bufferpools] Poolsize=0, and no RT statement. But, it does have [Main] FFTF=0.1, which I understand acts more on the internal routine on the CPU in balancing background to foreground routines, and does not in any way throttle back on the data sent to the GPU (hence why my GPU is having trouble drawing textures). Do I have that right? Before I get to acquiring a new GPU, would I be ahead to add ( in [bufferPools] an RT statement, and rem out Poolsize=0 ? Also noticed a setting in my old file TextureMaxLoad = 12, I'm not sure what that is? Finally, I am using a 120Hz refresh monitor. I like the 2X 60Hz in that it seems to reduce flicker. It may be a placebo, not sure….. My NV CP is set to 120Hz refresh. Am I better forcing vSync on or off? And, how does that relate to “ForceWindowedVSync=1 (or 0)” in FSX.CFG, compared to forcing it on or off in NV Inspector? So many questions- and it’s actually fun once you get the hang of it- and thanks to those that have responded to various other threads of mine here recently. Thanks, Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. November 15, 201213 yr which I understand acts more on the internal routine on the CPU in balancing background to foreground routines, and does not in any way throttle back on the data sent to the GPU (hence why my GPU is having trouble drawing textures). Do I have that right? It is a balancer between how much CPU power is given to the CPU for texture loading vs fast draw (FPS). You give it less for texture loading, FPS go up, you give it more, FPS go down. I wouldn't go below 0.15, and I am using 0.20. 0.1 is problematic and is causing quite often blurry textures. Finally, I am using a 120Hz refresh monitor. I like the 2X 60Hz in that it seems to reduce flicker. It may be a placebo, not sure….. My NV CP is set to 120Hz refresh. Am I better forcing vSync on or off? You should be running with vsync on according to my guide. This means if you have 120Hz, to achieve 30FPS, which should be your FPS limit in FSX, you should be using 1/4 setting in the inspector. That will give you the smoothest experience. You said you have followed my guide, but you ask odd questions like: Also noticed a setting in my old file TextureMaxLoad = 12, I'm not sure what that is? Although I stated at the beginning of the guide that I strongly recommend using clean fsx.cfg, and not tweaked by ******* or manual. My guide is like it is because I did test each part of it really carefully. The guide is now located here and if you really didn't go carefully through it, you should, also read everything I wrote. I really thought it through to make sure everything is running well and if set up correctly you should have amazing experience!
