have noticed that my arriving ATC dont show until I am very close to the airport. Is there any way to increase the range of ATC radios?

Don't know but if you're trying to get the weather or active runway and the airport has an ATIS, try tuning your COM2 radio to the ATIS. Many planes will let you have COM1 for transmit/receive and have COM2 active for receive only. You can usually pick up the ATIS from pretty far away, maybe 80 miles or so.
