January 31, 201313 yr Hi guys, I am looking for some views and opinions on whether a change from a ATI HD 5770 1GB, to a nVidia GTX 650ti 2GB would yield much of an improvement, in FSX ? My other systems specs are:- i7 2600k 3.4Ghz (turbo boost to 3.8Ghz), 8GB DDR3 RAM, Win 7 64 bit Many thanks, Raul.
February 1, 201313 yr In which scenarios are you trying to get more performance exactly? (busy airports, clouds, better IQ) What resolution are you running?
February 1, 201313 yr Hi, I am trying to be able to use a little more autogen, weather and traffic (not excessively, I understand FSXs limitations and the areas that it does not like to comprimise on). Although I know that generally people here do not recommend ATI, I have been looking at the HD 7850 2B today, and it looks a very good card for the budget, and seems to get some good reviews around the 'net. I run 1920x1200, on a single monitor.
February 1, 201313 yr Hey, Raul: My rec. - the GTX 650Ti,is good, or move on up to the 670/680, but the real boost in your "experience' will come from moving that cpu clock up to where it will drive those graphics. A 2600K at 4.9 will give you fabulous performance if matched with the right GPU - but do this first, before you spend any money. Right now - with FSX being a cpu-bound application - the cpu is your problem. Try the lower or middle o/c settings here, first. OK? :good: i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
February 1, 201313 yr Hi Paul, Many thanks for your post. Unfortunately, I am using a pre-built "off the shelf" PC that uses a (crappy!) MOBO that can not be OC's :( ........ it is a hard lesson I have learned and will apply, the next time I buy another PC for FSX! I've been told that some form of "software OC'ing" may be possible but I've never been able to find out more on actually making this happen. Cheers.
February 2, 201313 yr You don't need another pc, Raul - you need a different mainboard! $100 - $200 will buy a decent board. Don't worry about the 5770 - it will hang in there for FSX until you can get a better card. This is a hobby which tends to last for many years, so figure to spread out the cost of that board as................ $200 / 48(mths) = $4.17 per month! Cheap entertainment! i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
