Driver crash in Dx10, no problem with Dx9

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am still only making first steps in the wonderful world of FSX, but already very grateful for this resource - I have configured FSX to run really well in DX9 thanks to auto .cfg analysis and helpful posts of Avsim members.

My current problem however I could not solve through search: FSX works perfectly well in DX9 (any map, any craft), run perfectly well in Dx10 (prior to installation of Stevejp's patch), but now -after the aforementioned "shader release 3.2.2" installation, DX9 continues to work well, but DX10 mode loads up perfectly initially and always crashes to black screen 5-20 seconds afterwards. (Nvidia kernel has crashed and was recovered) Any plane, any map- same outcome. Not a hint of corruption, everything looks beautiful, loads of FPS, 50C temp on GPU and CPU, full control... and after a few seconds - bang! black screen.

My system is i5 2500k @4.3ghz, gtx580, w7 64bit, FSX Acceleration.

I have already updated video card drivers to latest 314, did "repair install" of FSX- no dice, cannot make dx10 work for longer than a few seconds. FSX dx9, IL2:Cliffs of Dover (dx10 graphics intensive sim), Rise of Flight, DCS, BF3 -all work without driver crashing, it did not happen even once with them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as DX10 runs at almost double fps compared to DX9 with identical settings.

Would you copy your fsx.cfg, please, Borsh, and then rename it as "Borsh_fsx.txt", (so it can be added to the post) and then add it to a post here, so we can take a look at how it is set up.

Also - just in case (I don't think this will fix it, but I'd like to cover the known "black screen" causes) download this version of the UIAutomationCore.dll from here, place it into the root folder of fsx, and rename it back to its proper name.

Something tells me you must be using mutilple displays, if I am correct then I would like you to reconfigure for single display across more than one monitor via Nvidia surround. If DX10 then works you must be experiencing the exact same thing that I have in the past.

Sincerly, Shakeystick (continual FSX DX10 nvidia surround mode simmer)

Many thanks for your answers guys!

I've installed UIAutomationCore.dll, changed monitor settings in Nvidia CP to single monitor performance- same result, crash after about 20 seconds.

I've uploaded my .cfg, please see attachment.

Really appreciate your help!

EDIT: I have to apologise for wasting your time- I have just checked again, and it USED to be the case that BF3, IL2:COD worked perfectly, but now they also crash few seconds in... So nothing to do with FSX DX10, the problem is DX10 in general. I will try reinstalling DX10 and see what other thing I could do. Once again- my apologies for not making sure before posting!

Ok, once again- apologies for wasting your time- the problem was not FSX specific at all. I now found out that my video card voltage was somehow set at 1V instead of 1.05V. I've set it back to correct value in MSI afterburner and all my Dx10 software works again, including FSX DX10 :) I flew for about 15 minutes just now - see a lot of other issues (flashing white-blue textures on the ground, bloom making sun looking very small and flat when viewd from the cockpit, screen tearing with trackir...) - but these are issues to be discussed in other topics, this one can be now closed :)

Cheers

Glad you've found a reason for all your fun, Borsh..

1). Blue-white squares: in the Bonus folder of the last two or three issues of the patch - Steve has included a bkg.bmp which goes in the FSX root folder.

2). SweetFX has very configurable bloom, vibrance, color, hue and a number of other features which (toned down from its default settings) can make quite a difference to the whole FSX experience - and works well with DX10.

3). Screen tearing is a Vsync problem, and is fixed a) by setting "Standard" and "1/2 Refresh Rate" in Inspector, with "30" set in the fsx Settings -> Display -> Graphics - -> Target frame rate: to 30, then putting "DisablePreload=1" in the [Main] section of the fsx.cfg.

Follow these suggestions, Borsh, then we can close out the thread!

All the Best,

Thanks Paul, you are very kind! I will try your suggestions :) The blue texture flashing is probably due to corrupt install - large patches of ground are tearing up and flashing white-blue... It happens in dx9 as well, but is less frequent than in dx10 where it happens every 30seconds or so and mostly at low alts. I think I need to uninstall, defrag and reinstall.

Just a quick question: is there any obvious cause for texture corruption like this in freshly installed FSX (zero addons)? my .cfg:

This is really going offtopic, but I will answer my question myself - it was due to ORBX England that I had previously. I have installed it again, and the issue is gone.

What is disconcerting is that I have uninstalled FSX following instructions, deleted all leftover folders in USers and Programs folders, removed all registry bits with CC cleaner, and still I had bits of previous installation interfering with the fresh one! Wow, this sim is tough! :)

Hmmmm.. strange one for sure.. You might try "Revo Uninstaller" instead of the Control Panel, Borsh. It will clean the registry and any files it finds, giving you the opportunity to delete or not to delete.

Thanks Paul! I will use it if (or rather when ;)) I need to reinstall again, but at the moment FSX is running very nicely- DX10 and DX9.

8QS AA and 16x Aniso + very smooth vsync (DX10's "DisablePreload=1" makes trackIR much less responsive and alive) are are too good to switch away from, but much more beautiful DX10 water is also pulling at me... :D

Its a beautiful sim, no doubt!

Cheers!
