GPU for Browsing/Video/Music PC

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I'm just debating with myself whether it's a worthwhile upgrade or not for my browsing PC which is also used for video/movie watching and music listening to go from the onboard Intel GMA 4500 to something basic like a GF210, GT430 or GT610 and it must be low profile.

Would also consider Radeon 6450, 5450, 5570 etc.

This would be running on an E7500 Core2Duo, 6GB Ram with output currently to a 24" Asus VE248H, so not worried about 3D or anything like that.

From looking around I'm struggling to find if I'd see any benefit. The PC is not used for gaming at all since I have my other rig for that.

I just bought new soundcards for my gaming PC and for my Browsing PC (went with Essence STX and Xonar DX respectively) to drive some high grade headphones I ordered cheaply from Japan (Audiotechnica AD900X & A500X) so If it's a worthwhile upgrade that will improve my overall video experience on my browsing box I'll drop the $30.00 or so and pick up one of these cards.

Thanks!

Never mind. Just went ahead and ordered a Radeon 5450 for next to nothing. (first time in approx 10 years I ordered a Radeon, last one was a Radeon 9600 Pro)

Could have got a used 5570 for nearly the same price but realised my slim browsing PC only has a 240W PSU and not 300W like I thought it did and the 5450 seems to have the lowest power consumption. Whilst not any good for gaming (Have my other PC for that) it will do what I need and offload from the onboard GPU. Nvidia options for a comparable price didn't seem to perform as well and had higher power consumption.

Card should arrive next week some time, hopefully around the same time as my new headphones and STX. The Xonar DX arrived yesterday.
