September 12, 200421 yr I've just installed the demo of FS Painter by Abacus and noticed that in "Animate mode" an FPs is shown on screen for each aircraft...in fact each repaint of each aircraft. Could this be the ultimate and also the most convenient way to find out which aircraft model is the most frame rate friendly? For instance: I loaded an Aardvark B743 and then the equivalent Project AI's B743 and the quoted FPs was significantly lower in the Aardvark model as I would have expected, but it seems to be a great comparison test of the many 'AI aicraft' now available and I have hundreds of them in my aircraft file.
September 13, 200421 yr Good catch! I'll have to check it out.Take care,--Tom GibsonCal Classic Propliner Page: http://www.calclassic.comFreeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.comDrop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___ Tom Gibson CalClassic Propliner Page
September 13, 200421 yr Its not that no one is interested, but there have been extensive testings of AI performance many times before. It is well known that Aardvark aircraft produce the lowest FPS hit of all, but if we only used Aardvark aircraft then we would have big holes in our AI fleets ;).Dan.
September 13, 200421 yr >Its not that no one is interested, but there have been>extensive testings of AI performance many times before.>I appreciate that, but with so many AI aircraft now available it's useful to know how each compares. It's also possible of course, to compare flyable aircraft too. Part of my flagging this up was the sheer convenience of the comparison test. No need to write plans to have them show at the test airport. (One thing it won't take account of though is the LOD model issue). I guess it's particularly useful for someone like me who has many types of AI installed. There is yet another use I've discovered and that is to easily check whether the textures of each installed repaint actually display. Much easier than cycling through the "create a flight" screen in FS. It means you that you can have none of the AI aircraft showing in that screen for faster loading and yet view them conveniently in FS Paint.:)
September 13, 200421 yr >(One thing it won't take account of though is the LOD model>issue). If your test doesn't take into account the LOD models (or lack of LOD's) it's not much use as a test of FPS friendliness.David Rai aardvark
September 14, 200421 yr Hello,After reading your post, I decided to do a simple test. I did the following before the test:1. Set the plane to one of the ramp gates in Hartsfield, Atlanta2. Set traffic to 0%3. Set weather to no wind, no clouds, clear.4. Set frames per second to unlimited.5. Radio off. Lights off. Set time to noon.6. Set visibility to unlimited. Then I loaded each of the following airplanes from Project AI and Aardvark. I counted FPS using both Fraps and FS9 built in counters.1. American Boeing 757-2002. Lufthansa Boeing 747-4003. Air France Boeing 747-4004. Delta 737-300 New ColorWhat I noticed was that FPS was nearly identical at 35 to 36 in spot view for both. There were very little fluctuations in both models. So, in my mind, these models are pretty similar in how much they
September 14, 200421 yr First, take a look at this link. It hasn't been updated for some time, but it offers a more comprehensive analysis.http://perso.wanadoo.fr/gotorun/AIframe.htmlSecond, if I read your post correctly, you are using only one aircraft of a given type in your test? If you want to really test the impact on framerates you probably need to do a bit more than that. Make yourself an AFCAD and some flightplans so you have like 200 aircraft of a given type on the ground. I think you will observe rather different results in your comparison between AIA and PAI.Third, the quantitative (framerates) advantage of AIA aircraft is significant, but the qualitative difference is even more important. The detail and precision of the models and the quality of the base textures and "official" repaints is truly outstanding. Project AI played a key role in the emergence of AI aircraft, but in the last year and a half AI Aardvark and other developers including FSPainter, Fernando Martinez, Charles Dayhuff, and several others have produced models that are in a whole different class.
