Overclock - Offset Voltage Value

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I have been overclocking my 3770k, and found that it is very stable at 4.5Ghz with fixed voltage of 1.24V. Prime 95 stressed my system for 2hr38min and the test completed with no issues. However, when I try to switch to OFFSET MODE in BIOS, problems begin. Core temp tells me the VID at full loaded is between 1.2610V and 1.2660V, so I OFFSET the voltage to  -0.021.

Now, the system sometimes refuses to boot. If it boots, I may get a BSOD with error code x000000101. No mini dump file is created.

I will be truly grateful if anyone can give me some ideas.

Specs:

i7 3770K

ASROCK Z77 Extreme 4

Corsair 8GB*2

EVGA GTX660

Thanks.

The VID is not the base Vcore. How much Vcore you end up with in offset mode depends on target speed, LLC & the offset value itself.

Try disabling all power saving modes (EIST, C1E) and increase the offset until it boots ok. Then check CPU-Z to see how much Vcore is being applied.

Keep in mind that if you didn't increase LLC (Load Line Calibration) Vcore is most likely going to drop under load

increase the offset

Hi Dario,

What do you mean by "increase the offset"? Does it mean going into more negative value or going towards zero?

Thanks.

A higher negative offset would result in a lower Vcore, so you need to make it less negative, maybe even slightly positive.

But again, unless you turn off power savings you will not know your actual Vcore unless you apply load, something you don't want when you're trying to figure out how much Vcore you get with a certain combination of multi, offset & LLC.

What's your LLC set to?

What's your LLC set to?

Hi Dario,

My LLC is set of Level 2.

Just tested offset -0.01 with power saving off, it works.

Again tested offset -0.01 with power saving on, BSOD once.

I want to turn on power saving, do you have any ideas?

Thanks.

Leave power savings off for the time being. How much idle Vcore (CPU-Z) do you get with -0.01 offset & LLC set to level 2?

Power saving is off.

CPU-Z reads 1.232V and VID reads 1.2610/1.2660. LLC level 2.

Thanks.

Ignore the VID, it's meaningless at this point.

So you want 1.24V before you start stress testing, so up the offset another couple notches and check again. Once you're at 1.24V, apply load and see if it goes down (Vdroops) or not

Sorry I need to correct. What I stated above was at full stress.

I get 0.0960V to 1.1V at idle.

Then you didn't switch off power savings

Then you didn't switch off power savings

Hi Dario,

Thanks for the help. After some tweaking, the processor runs fine at -0.005 offset and power saving on. Thanks.

Great stuff. Nice OC at low volts Albus. Enjoy it
