Back to work on Autoland 2004...

Featured Replies

For those who've expressed interest and/or help me test this utility.... Many of you also know I became ill about the same time I was testing Autoland. I just visited my surgeon today, and my latest CT scan and lab work shows that I'm fully recovered from the pancreatitis that had me feeling so very crummy for such a long time. The surgeon left me with the caution that I'll probably have to have my gallbladder removed in the next five years or so, since he thinks that was the cause of my illness. No big deal.So I plan to resume finishing touches on my program's documentation, and get the program out as soon as I return from a scheduled trip to Florida, sometime the week after next. It will be nice to get out of Phoenix for a change. Thanks to everyone who has offered their prayers and concern...Regards,John

All good news John, we'll look forward to the Autoland release. Thanks. R-

I don't know you John but I certainly remember Autoland. Sorry to hear you had such a serious illness. Don't rush trying to please us... make sure your up to par. We can always wait for nice utilty.

Hi John,Likewise sorry to hear about your illness. Can you briefly describe what Autoland does, unless lol, it's all explained in the title - ie fixes the autoland in FS.Adam

"Can you briefly describe what Autoland does, unless lol, it's all explained in the title - ie fixes the autoland in FS."Autoland is a standalone VB program which a user starts, then minmizes on the desktop. As MSFS runs, it monitors whether a user has enabled APR mode via the autopilot. If it sees this, it tracks the ILS approach down to decision height, then turns APR mode off and flies the remaining approach, flares, and applies reverse thrust. After the aircraft has slowed to 40 kts or so, it resets and is ready for the next flight.Autoland doesn't fix anything--since there's no default Autoland in MSFS anymore (since FS2000, that is). Some aircraft will fly a pretty good approach in by default if they are locked on approach just right, and are descending at just the right rate and with just the right airspeed. But FS2004 isn't really Autolanding those aircraft the way it could in FS2000.One exception is there's several gauges tailored to specific aircraft which do what my little utility does. My utility will work with most aircraft without the need to add a guage, and it would even work with an Ultralight, were it equipped with an ILS capable autopilot.Having said all that, it leaves bait for some Smartaleck to come in again and boldly say there isn't a need for such a utility, or that "real pilots" don't Autoland--whatever.... Hopefully my previous replies will remind them to stay clear of such remarks. My utility has nothing to do with real flying, procedure, or anything else. I wrote it so simmers could have fun. If it isn't for someone, I hope they at least show some capacity for tact and class and keep their mouths shut. I've added this rant because every dang time I've explained what this program does, some idiot has barged into my thread with such a comment.-John

John, am I correct in believing that pilots of many commercial airliners (Airbus, 737NG...) have the choice of allowing their aircraft to AutoLand if they so wish?Surely then, this validates your program, and that those who choose to knock it are the ones in error! Thanks for choosing to upgrade it to FS9, I look forward to using it, and hope that it will help where some aircraft try to land an ILS by being several feet to the right of the runway at certain airports! And of course, good luck with a speedy recovery :)

I'm very happy to hear you're feeling better, John. You had us worried there for a bit!
