October 31, 200421 yr Hello, After releasing my FS Night Time last week, I put together another utility I call FS Remote Control that I wanted for use mainly with ActiveSky and WideClient remotely. I run FS2004 on my main machine and WideClient with ActiveSky on my email server. However, I don't want to have to log in to start and stop those programs on my remote computer each time I run and stop FS on my main computer. So basically it will detect Flight Sim running on your main computer then start up WideClient & ActiveSky (& Whatever Else You Want) on my remote computer when FS is in running state. It will close WideClient & ActiveSky as well when FS gets closed.Carmine http://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/Images/wave.gif
October 31, 200421 yr That sounds like a great utility. Thx fr the heads-up. I will be a sure downloader.Alex
October 31, 200421 yr Thx Carmine, this might be the motivation I need to get my 2nd computer hooked up. :-)Don't mean to hijack your post, but thought it might a good spot to ask. I currently have 2 computers hooked up to 1 monitor and use a KB activated switch box to go back and forth. This wouldn't present a problem with AS2004 because once it's running I don't need to go back to it, so a 2nd monitor isn't really needed. Likewise, with FSNav, I use it like a chart so don't watch my flight progress on it--I don't have the aircraft showing. I just switch to it get the NAV and radio frequencies and figure out where I am, but not in real time, I calculate it. My question is, how much of an FPS saving will I get? FSNav dosn't seem to slow down my system much, if at all, and AS2004 of course does, but that could be because of the weather I'm generating, not the program itself. Any idea on this? How much of the weather generation is done by the CPU and how much is done by the video card I guess is the more accurate question. Regardless, just having AS2004 and FSNav started up and ready when I've selected my flight sounds pretty cool. billg
October 31, 200421 yr ActiveSkyThe program itself almost needs no system resources. The fps impact is only imposed by the additional clouds and graphics that your card must handle. So putting it on the 2nd computer will have almost zero effect.FSNavFSNav has a dll that is running inside FS. So you cannot move it to a 2nd computer at all.Unless you do not have stuff running that really needs system resources like Project Magenta you will not see a large improvement in fps. owever a lot of these small programs like ActiveSky, a failure program, an Internet Browser and whoknowswhat really can add up. And I feel that the use of the sim is a lot more conventient with a 2nd computer. E.g. I can run the Internet browser on the 2nd machine, open up an Internet connection for Active Sky. Check my charts etc.etc..Alex
October 31, 200421 yr That's just what I wanted to ask. Would I really see a benefit of FPS OR smoothness if I dropped it in a 2nd PC? My concern is really for smoothness but from reading threads it seems this is really a FS2004 issue and not an active sky issue.
October 31, 200421 yr What you will gain is the loss of FS pauses when ActiveSky updates stations or areas. I also plan on putting Radar Contact on the remote computer as well. If this isn't useful to you then that's ok too. But here is the issue that has bothered me.1. You load FS on your gaming PC.2. After FS is running you load up WideClient on the remote computer.3. Load up ActiveSky on the Remote Computer.4. Fly around till you can't see straight.5. Close out Flight Sim and go about your normal business.6. If you don't close out the programs on the remote computer, AS will actually cause higher CPU usage on the remote computer. VERY noticable with the screen saver I have on the remote PC.7. Have to go in and close out those programs, then when I want to fly again I have to repeat all that.Anytime you put any software on your FS PC you are using resources. Resources lead to FPS loss and stutters depending on it's demand and architecture. Also, this leads my software down the road on something else I'm working on to allow you to Fly on your computer and have a buddy or student on the remote computer fly along with you or take over as well as talk to each other! ;-)Carmine http://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/Images/wave.gif
October 31, 200421 yr I agree. The impact of AS is so small but if you have running enough of these "so small" applets, eventually it's got to make an impact on FPS - as you said they are using resources. I will definately try your app when it's ready. I still have been seeing some studders (little ones and big iones every now and then), even if I run AS in offline mode. Not saying AS causes it but trying to dwindle down the variables.
November 1, 200421 yr Sounds great. From what I just read in the Wide FS manual, you can have it launch programs when Wide FS launched. You would have to have your utility running all the time to to detect FS being loaded. Not to discourage your creativity, but maybe this type of functionality belongs in Wide FS?Maybe you can email Pete Downson with the concept and he can add this functionality to Wide FS itself. That way Wide FS can stay resident without having other utilities staying resident. You know that flight simmers want to run as thin as possible. I'll forward your idea to Pete as well.Great idea, though!Barry
November 1, 200421 yr The problem with WideFS on the WideClient side is that you still have to stop and start with Flight Sim or it will not work. The point being entirely NOT TO HAVE TO TOUCH THE REMOTE PC AT ALL! Currently Wideserver does not work that way. If Pete changes it then that would be great, but my program will be a 1 click solution for Server & Client side and all other programs you want to run on each.Carmine http://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/Images/wave.gif
November 1, 200421 yr I am not sure if I understand you. You need to start wideclient every time you start FS?If that is correct, then there's something wrong with your software. I keep wideclient open all the time and connects immediately when I load FS9.Other than that I use absolutely every program other than FS9 and SBRelay in the secondary PC. The point is to never leave the FS screen anytime I want to do anything with the other programs, and mostly to use Squawkbox in the secondary to and don't use any portion of my screen for that.Leo
