September 3, 201312 yr Hello I have been hosting my friend and he has been using my IP thru LAN connection no problems for couple of years. I only had a modem connected to the computer. Now I recently added a router. So I have Cable to Modem Modem to Router Router to Computer connections. My friend is unable to connect with my IP that is listed in the Network Connection Details IPv4 IP Address. Like I was using before. By the way I am on Vista Home premium 64. How can the connection to my computer by my friend be done while I am using the router if possible or do I have unplug the router from the computer and just plug the modem straight to the computer? I hope I make sense not very good with all this stuff. Thanks in advance for your help.
September 4, 201312 yr Commercial Member Your friends pc will be sending data to your router which has the ip address. Since you may have many devices connected to your router it does not know where to forward the data to. Assuming you are using the standard ports, you need to forward UDP 6112 to 6122 to your pc running fsx. Normally this is done by some advanced setting inside your router. Sometimes you can select this pc by its name, eg. "TomsGaming", more often you can only forward to an internal ip address. I'd normally expect this to be from the private range 192.168.xxx.xxx. If you can only forward to an ip address then be aware that your router by default will probably allocate a temporary address (lease) and after a period of time may assign a different address. If this happens then any port forwarding set up for that machine will now fail to get there. To prevent this from happening most routers allow you to reserve/specify an ip address for each machine. Alternatively you can manually specify an address on your pcs network card but you'll have to configure other settings as well so I'd leave this unless you are really desperate. September 5, 201312 yr Author Thank you very much Dave for your reply and excellent explanation. That's exactly what I have the 6112 and 6122 also 192.168.xxx.xxx. 1. Reserve an Ip address: In the router manual I guess that's what they mean when they mention to Statically Assign an IP address? 2. Also I just found in the Network and Sharing center inside the Wireless Network Connection Properties: There is a box that you can check that says: Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection. I wonder if this would allow my friend to connect to my computer? 3. My other option is simply disconnect the router from the computer and connect the modem back to the computer when I am flying with my friend. I suppose this would create a new IP each time not sure about that. Also would this cause any problem to the router settings when I reconnect it to the computer. If you can Dave or anybody else answer these questions that would be greatly appreciated.

No. This is a feature of windows where you could share your internet if you were using a modem to pcs connected to the same network as you. This is irrelevant for what you want. 3.
