November 18, 200421 yr I installed Shez's great Palm Springs airport but I am having trouble with ATC giving me the correct visual for altitude ~15 nm out. There seems to be a mtn range to the north west of the field and ATC tells me to climb to 11000 when I am on base to 13R and the to descend to 6800 and 2500 respectively on final in a matter of 10 nm.I have made 2 flts with a crj and ATR and had to approach 13R at an attonishing 3500 ft sec drop on my VSI indicator inorder to even make the runway at the halfway point.I was wondering if anyone has a clue how to aaproach this runway. The flight originates out of KSAN at an altitude of 13000ft and I use the FS9 flight planner.ThanksAndy
November 18, 200421 yr I believe this is one of those airports where ATC does not recognize the surroundings too well. I have encountered the same type of instructions. Either I hand fly in VFR or let ATC vector me in to a certain point and then blow them off!
November 22, 200421 yr The only IAP in FS9 KPSP is a VOR Rwy 36 B approach, which will bring you near the airport and instruct you to circle to land - most of the time.Landing on 13R is most likely done visually in the real world by flying on course 304 from the IAF at the TRM VOR over the PSP VOR at 3,000 and executing an almost 180 degree descending turn. The NACO Approach Plate shows 13R as having only 6857 feet usable after the displaced threshold. The NACO Approach Plate Minimum Safe Altitude at the 25MN range from the PSP VOR is 6,900 ft to the north east, 7,900 ft to the south east and 12,100 ft to the west. The missed approach requires you to climb to 4,000 ft and use the 124 radial from the PSP VOR.It does not look like a very friendly place to fly into on a day with limited visibility. The departure procedures are also a witch - turn and fly southeast from the PSP VOR until getting to 4,500 feet if going northeast, 5,600 feet if going north, 7,000 feet if going south or 7,700 feet if going west. There is actually a climb holding pattern over the TRM VOR
