October 30, 201312 yr Hello, Hope some one can answer this for me. When should anti ice be used? Do you leave it on at cruise? Thanks Mark
October 30, 201312 yr Commercial Member Hey Mark, Depends on aircraft type but here are the basics. Engine anti ice on the ground - turn on if engines are running and TAT is below 10 degrees Celsius and visible moisture exists ( clouds/rains/fog) no need to use it in climb after take off, unless you are being held at low altitude for whatever reason. In descent - Should be enabled, especially if descending into cloud. No need to enable it in cruise, SAT should be well below -40c too cold for ice to form unless flying near thunderstorms. Wing Anti Ice - Should not be used on the ground, in flight with slats up enable if TAT is below 10 degrees Celsius, again if clouds/rain/fog exits. As above no need to enable in cruise, temperature should be too cold. Most modern aircraft will let you know if it detects ice. So those are the basics, one important note, using engine anti ice increases your idle engine thrust, this can affect your descent path. Regards. Rob Prest
