Pick and Mix Payware, a concept....

Featured Replies

Hi,Was just think about groups who develop payware, seeing as some payware are download files of 50 > 60mb, why not split it up into say the model, panel, sound, etc, and have a complete package too, which already exists.I reckon this would tempt more dial up users, and give a bit more choice.Tell me what you think.

Why not just order the package on CD :-lolYou might have a point ... but you should be able to use a decent download manager so you don't need to download it all at once. Nonetheless most people have broadband nowadays. -Daniel

"You might have a point ... but you should be able to use a decent download manager so you don't need to download it all at once. Nonetheless most people have broadband nowadays."Ok, let me put 2 points here.1) Many payware companies do not support download managers due to security issues2) Not everyone has the luxury of being able to get broadband, they are thousands of people in the UK who can't get it due to BT being an arse.Dan.

Moreover, perhaps some people only want the panel and don't want the rest of the package. I've been itching to get the RFP panel to use with my POSKY 747 classics but the price tag is not really what I want to pay for just the panel, since their model a) doesn't look right and :( would be way too framerate hungry for my wussy machine. I used to like the days when you could get a moderately priced PSS panel only without having to get their mediocre external model as well. Misha

(quote) "Why not just order the package on CD" (unquote)Well it would depend on the pirce, but I would also be concerned over framerates, even if I had broadband, this would be an issue, and so I may only want particular components. If I got it on the CD I may be paying for things which aren't particularly important to me.I'm not saying don't make one, but I think maybe there could be an option to have particular things, like if u went to buy a car in the showroom, and you have a list of options. If there was a pick and mix option, then maybe these could only be downloaded, saving on CD/distribution costs.Anyone else have an opinion? :)

It's a support nightmare already what with the miriad different configurations people are running. Now you want support for people plugging a panel into a completely different model with a completely unrelated FDE and soundset?Just an example:"This 737 panel is f*ing crap. When I use it with my XXXXX 777 the flight dynamics are all wrong and I get incorrect flapsettings" kind of remarks will abound and quite in contrast with the current situation the panel producer will no longer be able to say that using the panel like that is unsupported. If you think that's farfetched just look at what people did with the PSS A320 panel. They tried to plug it into a POSKY (or other) A330 (after all, it's an Airbus and has two engines so it's the same right?) and then complained high and low that things didn't work (despite clear statements from PSS that it wouldn't people insisted that it should...).

I've bought tons of aircraft and scenery from all the vendors you've ever heard of and a few more besides, and until lately it was all via a dialup link. I don't think I ever had a problem using DAP, a download manager. Worst case you limit your DLM to download on a single channel; it's still restartable. But I rarely had to do anything unusual. Some people don't like DAP and think it leads to spyware; I purchased a license, which got rid of the ads, use Norton which suggested I delete DAPBHO.dll which I did with no apparent ill effect, and I use Ad-aware and Norton frequently.I'm not here to advertise DAP, other DLM's may work just fine. Just thought I'd report that my experience during the years I had only dialup was that download managers worked just fine.Dick Bixler
