A/T Use in High Wind Approaches

Recommended Posts

Control your GS with throttles(power) and control your speed with attitude(elevators).

The funny thing is that this is not the case any more in mordern jet aircraft. The new rules for pitch and power is that if you change one, you have to adjust the other. Using power to control your GS now days will get you fast or slow. Using elevators for speed will get you high or low.

Example. I was training this new guy on the G550. We were flying a FMS NDB approach and he was LNAV/VNAVing manually down to MDA. He got a little low below path and started adding power. I noticed this, but sat on it and continued to monitor. He added more power and I questioned him. He quickly berated his flying and said he had momentarily reverted back to C-17 flying. He mentioned that the C-17 has blown flaps and that you could adjust sink rate by adding or reducing power. They actually add power to flare the aircraft. I told him thats cool, but in this jet adding power will have you low and fast.
