ATIS and METAR question

Featured Replies

Hi all,I think it may be a stupid question but i can't answer by myself. When flying online we get atis and metars in the connection softwares (ex. ivap for ivao, ecc...) and in the green upper line in Flight Simulator. But where do real pilots get real atis and metars ? in what instruments? Is it possible to have the same in flight simulation? Thanks in advanceDylan

In general aviation aircraft like the Cessna 172 you just tune your communications radio to the appropriate published frequency for the airport ATIS and listen to the METAR (which will be slightly different in that the wind directions given via the radio are usually magnetic, while when they are written they are true).

you get a reliable briefing wherever you can. usually, your country's aviation authority will provide a way--telephone, web or personal contact at the airport. i've even seen an sms system. the web version is probably easiest to use in the sim. as an example, just check out this one (for canada)http://www.flightplanning.navcanada.ca/cgi...on&TypeDoc=html

Or for the Netherlands: http://www.knmi.nl/product/luchtv/nedactbe.htm (METAR)http://www.knmi.nl/product/luchtv/nedvlver.htm (TAF)http://www.knmi.nl/product/luchtv/wbkllu.htm (weather briefing (Dutch))http://www.knmi.nl/product/luchtv/wdeng.htm (LL forecast (English))METAR and TAF are also available on videotext (over public TV stations).Everything available through 0900 telephone numbers. Some available over 0900 fax numbers and/or from met offices at some airfields.http://www.knmi.nl/product/luchtv/ for all options.
