Odd behavior when starting FSX

Recommended Posts

***This issue has been resolved.***

Good morning,

Thank you in advance for any advice/recommendations.  Typically it takes a matter of a few seconds to get to the FSX opening screen after I double click the FSX shortcut.  When starting FSX now, however:

- The application begins to load as if it were starting after new scenery had been added (the splash screen

comes up and is followed by the dialog boxes that read: loading terrain data, loading auto-generated scenery, loading air, land and sea traffic, etc.)

- When the bar gets to 100% (after all the scenery files load), the splash screen disappears and the application (without the usual FSX start screen opening on the desktop) auto minimized to the task bar. When clicking the FSX application icon in the taskbar, I can hear the wind noise associated with what I believe is the default FSX kite situation file but there is nothing visible on the desktop.

I have twice tried to remedy by deleting the FSX.cfg file and restarting FSX which seems to correct the issue.  I change all of the settings (based on the recommendations in the PMDG 777 introduction document) and things appear to work fine.  However, if I then close FSX and double click the shortcut to restart it, the odd behavior indicated above starts again.

I haven't added any new applications or scenery in FSX so I don't know why the start-up situation is being "corrupted".  I also tried a system restore (just in case), and I ran the Windows defrag program...no change in the behavior.  I am running Windows 7 64-bit.

Once again, any and all recommendations/suggestions would be appreciated.

Sincere thanks,

Keith Jackson

This is odd, I've never experienced this personally, but may I ask if you have tried running FSX as Administrator and seeing if that makes a difference?

Certainly.  It appears that my error was in using the "outdated" FSX shortcut on the desktop (or the one in the Start Menu).  I had forgotten to delete and refresh those.  At least I think that was the problem as everything seems to be working well at this point.  Thanks for asking.

Next time use Alt+Enter to swap Windowed modes. If FSX shuts down abnormally, the position of the view can be mis-saved as off screen. You can still hear it but can't see it.
