Stuttering: Full Screen vs Windowed Mode

Featured Replies

Hi,

Way back in the days of v.2.0 and also, if memory serves, v2.1, some simmers were experiencing a strange phenomenon whereby frame rates were restored by simply clicking on and off the menu bar or switching back and forth between screen modes. Well, I believe the latter is still present in certain situations.

Normally I prefer flying in Full Screen mode as it feels more realistic and the responsiveness of the menus is rock solid unlike their behaviour in Windowed mode.

Since installing v.2.3 (yes, I went down the full install route, but haven't quite given up yet on finding a convincing explanation for those Patch Updater failures) I've noticed an occasional problem while flying in and out of clouds (Fair Weather Theme, stock textures). I have frame rates pegged at 25 which normally provides very smooth performance on my rig. For no obvious reason the sim starts stuttering badly and frame rates can drop quite dramatically into single digits and don't seem to recover, at least not in the short term. However, this rang a faint bell and when I switched momentarily to Windowed mode the frame rate jumped back up again and were maintained on going back to Full Screen. It's as if there is a loss of focus and requires this 'nudge' or reinitialising manoeuvre to restore the sim's engine to normality. This can be reproduced.

I'm wondering whether others have noticed this behaviour? Perhaps this is all tied in with the other problems currently being experienced with the P3D 2.3 clouds.

Mike
