June 6, 200520 yr Still some confusion here. Specifically, the stall referred to by Bruce relates to max alpha (i.e. elevator deflection), not fin stall. The Airbus incident is nothing to do with Va probably because the types Va is defined as I described. Some other aircraft define Va as the limiting speed for full deflection of any control; in those cases the rudder maybe the limiting control. As with heavies, Va is usually related to the intersection of max alpha and the load limit, all the controls are weighted via the Q-feel electro-hydraulic control system. The specific issue with the Airbus is that the rudder was not weighted enough to prevent (or even discourage) full deflection. An appropriate level of control weighting is a CofA requirement in the UK (not sure about the US).
