Controller Question About Not Just FSX?

I play quite a lot of PC games other than FSX, although NEVER online. Mostly FPS type games.

I want a new keyboard setup, and also a gamepad type thing for my left hand, with a thumb button for movement.  I like the look of the Razor gaming pads, this sort of thing... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Razer-Tartarus-Expert-membrane-Gaming/dp/B00ELGHM8C

 

Only I'm not sure about whether I should be using 'mechanical' or 'membrane' type buttons.  It seems there are many views on this, some a little more err.... heated than others;-)

What are your views and experience with this kind of kit for gaming in general? And what are your views about the keypad construction type?
