My FS pet peave: Cockpit Windows

Featured Replies

Why is it that there is not attention paid to modelling cocpit windows? This vital part of all cockpits, both 2D and 3D, are left blank, transparent? Sure windows are transparent, but most have reflection off them, and residue build up. I feel if there could be a reflection off the windows or something to show that the window is actually THERE in front of you the cockpit would be more realistic. Instead the designers never seem to model anything leaving the Flight sim experience lacking a bit. Some aircraft have heating elements modelled into the window giving the flyer a better sence of there being glass seperating the cockpit from the outside environment.

Many payware models do just that, but at the price of a performance hit, so you probably need a configuration menu to optionally turn them off.Allcott

However, there are many aircraft that model textured glass in 3D mode and they are certainly not all payware either. Try anything by Bill Lyons. Try the Long Island Classics Christen Eagle. Try some of the Russian MIGs and American F-18s. And the Russian aircraft that even have ice buildup on the windshield; can't remember which, offhand, but it's either an Antonov or Tupolev. My own favourite is the MAAM-SIM product, of course, where Jan Visser has done a fantastic job of the glass reflections in 3D view.MarkMark "Dark Moment" BeaumontVP Fleet, DC-3 AirwaysTeam Member, MAAM-SIM[a href=http://www.swiremariners.com/cathayhk.html" target="_blank]http://www.paxship.com/maamlogo2.jpg[/a]

My peeve is the side window views in otherwise great addons that for some reason aren't up to the standards set by the rest of the package and take up 1/2 of the viewing area. Best to leave them out completely. You "feel there" then all of a sudden you get this cheap looking graphic that seems totally out of context and ruins your view and your submersiveness (if that is a word, lol). billg

Some developers even overdo it and have these tinted blue or green windows that make the world outside look dark and totally unrealistic.

I'm with you all the way. I wish the Aeroworx would add window textures to their great Kingair 200. In addition to modeling the view of the aircarft nose from the VC. Thats one of the few things missing.
