September 5, 200520 yr Lately, about every 4th flight , I get a Crash to Black Screen. FS9 just locks up. Thankfully, it usually happens after I land. I am flying on Vatsim withUT USA , and a few sceneries, but not many added on since before the crashes began about a month ago. The error message is almost always the same NTDLL.DLL. Anyone else having this problem? I have gone the usualy route of looking for duplicate AFCADS and defragging and running Registry Mechanic and spyware, and still no luck...

September 6, 200520 yr Author Me too, sometimes I get crashes to black screen with no warning, no scenery freezing or anything. I have even timed it. For awhile it was about 20 min. into the flight, this last one tonight was around 35 min into the flight. I can't trouble shoot something that doesn't happen all the time. I don't get an error message telling me where to even look.I use auto-start and am wondering if something is being turned off or if it is static real weather.I've gone the video card driver route. I'm thinking about a re-install of FS9. I will have to save the FS9 cfg if I expect to get back to where I'm at now. My payware should remain after uninstall.XP SP2DELL 8300 1 gig ram, 128 MB ATI 9800 pro 5.8 drivers.
September 6, 200520 yr I also use FS autostart, but have for many months, and this just started about 6 weeks ago. I have heard some people state that it might be a temperature issue, and suggest leaving the case off the PC and use a small fan aimed at the PC. I don't think that this is my problem, since I have Air Conditioning on pretty cool. I may try and not use FS Autostart for awhile, but the problem I have is that it sometimes is a couple of days before it occurs again.
September 6, 200520 yr Author I think I will have to start a log and briefly note what the flight situation was with all these crashes. There was one time that I flew back to back a "saved flight" in Shupe's Beech 18 and had it crash right around the 20 min mark both times. Last night it was around 35 min with the B-200.I was thinking that it was a "saved" flight, for some reason, that caused the crash. After some crashes I resumed the flight from the start using "create a flight" and completed the flight ok. I've had crashes before because of scenery and as I approached the addon scenery and it started to load the scenery, it crashed. I would note a freeze before going to black screen, but this is different, it just goes to a black screen with the message after a minute that flight sim has to close because of an error. I thought it might be the downloaded static real weather because of the timing aspect. If using real weather and staying connected for the updates, it is updated every 15 min. Ergo the 20 min mark that I noted I thought could have been static real weather trying for an update without being connected to the internet, but I didn't get a windowed connection warning. I don't like staying connected to the internet because of the load and the interruption from incoming emails.I have Fs Sky World 2004 and thought maybe is was a texture from it but there doesn't seem to be any consistency to the crashes. In the back of my mind I always seem to come back to something connected to FS Auto Start, "Saved Flight" or downloaded weather. Maybe I will try turning AI down to zero and see what happens.Try not using auto start and see if you still get the crashes.I was an aircraft mechanic before my disability. It was always the intermittent, inconsistent problem that caused me the most concern because only time could prove the problem was fixed.
September 6, 200520 yr Author Bob,I forgot to ask you if you thought flight sim was stable while using "auto start" BEFORE you loaded the flight.I have noticed that something doesn't seem quite right when I have "auto start" running and BEFORE I hit the "fly now" button.as an example, I have XP SP2 for my OS;After "auto start" has shut down everything and flight sim is running, I have the flight menu on the screen. All seems well. BUT if I have to use the task manager (CTRL ALT DELETE) to start "FS screen" or get my internet connection "sign in" MSN exe. on the screen, the flight sim menu is minimized and this is where it seems to get unstable. In this condition I sometimes get a little window at the bottom of my screen that is black and it remains black. When I place my cursor on the black window, which is the minimized flight sim window, I get a flickering between the arrow and hour glass. Sometimes the black window isn't black but has the "Flight sim" in the minimized window with "restore" or "close" options etc available. Other programs (Task manager, MSN exe etc) show up ok and I have control of them in this minimized windowed state. Then to get the flight sim flight menu to restore again from the black minimized windowed state I have to use the "switch to" option in the task manager. If I have to switch airplanes after getting the flight menu back from the minimized state, the aircraft preview window doesn't always seem to act normally. Most of the time the airplane preview window does show the airplane only after I hit "change" again or the "fly now" button. The flights then load to full screen ok.
September 6, 200520 yr I would look at the setup toolbar in FS Autostart and make sure you only have the recommended applications closing down. Try running ScanAFD to look for duplicate AFCADS. Mine "usally goes to the instantaneous black screen, as you described, upon touchdown, but it has also hit mid flight.
September 6, 200520 yr Author Bob I do follow the "Auto Start" recommedations concerning what to shut down. I will check out the AFCADS but the back to back CTDs I mentioned with Shupe's Beech 18, that flight was completed on the third attempt not using "auto start", so I can't see how an AFCAD could have caused it.Did you notice the new posting "How do you start up flight sim?" by Dondo? He has implied CTDs while using "auto start".
