failing autopilot system

I am using the latest x737 version and when I set up the autopilot computer to fail based on IAS or time, the autopilot never seems to fail.  The plane happily flies on.  I am using the x737FMC add on.  If i try something like an engine fire, the failure occurs as expected.  Any ideas why this is happening?
