Moving up from NV 780 /3GB

I have a somewhat aged home-built PC that I constructed originally about 10 years ago.  I've put a new mobo, CPU and GPU in several times since then, but due to getting a new job at work and RL flying I have been too busy to do any simming for the past year or so-  but I'm heading into my last year of work next year and so things are lightening up- thanks goodness. My current system is a P8P67 with an i7-2700K, and 8GB, and the GPU is a GTX 780 (3GB VRAM).  Monitor is 1080p.

 

I installed the X-Plane beta and I obviously need to do something to hardware :). I intend to upgrade RAM to at least 16GB.  On the GPU, which is my question:  is a GTX 980 (4GB VRAM) a good upgrade path from the 780?  I'm trying to not put too much in $$ into this PC for now.
