December 15, 200520 yr Hi all.Looking at the above at airlinesimulations.comAnyone have it, or an earlier version? Looks quite interesting, though I wouldn't accuse their website of appearing overly-professional.The ten-line spiel on one page had numerous spelling and grammatical mistakes, which makes me wonder about the product itself.Keen for any user comments.CheersTim
December 15, 200520 yr Author I don't have it and I am a little bit undecided, if I should get it or not. Any input would be appreciated. The price tag (AUS 65, approx. USD 50) seems very steep for a product with little marketing, no user forum and no comprehensive reviews.Pat
December 15, 200520 yr I agree Pat.I reckon the concept is excellent, and assume they've put all their budget into the product and not marketing...Giving it a very wide berth until some existing users compare it to...say...free porn or sliced bread.CheersTim
December 15, 200520 yr Author Actually I did find a good review on IGN:"June 30, 2005 - Being an Airline/Airport/Airplane enthusiast, a game that allows one to operate his own airline has an attraction to me like a moth to a humming, flickering flourescent light. I was very pleased with what I found, but not all would be.The game itself is not a "Game" at all. If you were expecting a throwback to Airline Tycoon: Evolution, prepare to be grossly dissapointed. The game is not graphicly centered in any way, shape or form. The menus look almost primitive, technologicly speaking. There are no animations, no airport scenes... nothing. But the beauty of the game is in its simulation. Starting the game, your first task is to develop a buisness plan to submit to your investors. Based on your selections and your percieved chance of "Success" your plan could return a mighty mountian of investor's cash for you to whimsicly spend on whatever you deem worthy. Or not. From there the myriad of options available to you is so expansive, I cannot even begin to describe it. Nearly every plane ever built is included, and available for you to buy, along with some prototypes that were never actually built. You also have the option to start as early as the 1960's, for a new challenge. The game progresses on from there rather slowly, but this is good. With so much going on, it's very easy to forget to do something.Once you begin, the first task is to pick what airports you wish to operate flights to, and what aircraft to buy. This is where a missing feature will scream out at you - no ability to take out a loan. This can be annoing when you're just starting out, but have no fear. The game still allows you to turn a profit if you know what you're doing, how ever small. Once you have those aircraft, you can outfit them with the finest luxury seats with all the proverbial trimmings. Yea, right. As you expand, you can open up hubs, start filling out orders for new planes, build new terminals, set-up Frequient Flyer plans... nearly anything. The options are almost daunting. You can even dabble in the stock market and real-estate. Be sure to keep staff happy, your planes well maintained and you're golden. Maybe even too golden. After the first 5 in-game years the game becomes easy, and a little monotonous. This is OK for some who want nothing more than to create an empiric airline and squash all competition, but others will find it a drag. But there's allways the option to start a new game and...This is one of the game's losing points. There is so little variation between games. Once you conqure the game once, it seems booring, and the sence of satisfaction is lost. In additon, there are no senarios to undertake (yet) and the competition is nearly static. City dynamics aren't very dynamic at all. Big City's = big money, and it's very hard to make money on short routes. Thus you can't go back and start a "Regional" carrier with much sucess, or try a carrier that flys to small bush airports, like the Real-world Great Lakes Air. There's no more drive to beat the game again, especialy if you aren't an Airline efficianado.Overall this game is great because of all the things you can do. But some of the things you can't do are pretty big things. Things I mentioned above, as well as work with Manufacturers to create a new plane As real world airlines do, or play a futureistic game - the senario will go on as long as you want, but for some reason Boeing still wants to sell 737-600's in 2021.In addition to this, the game is buggy. And I mean crawling with them! And customer service from the small Australian manufacturer is... less than pleasent. This review was written about version 6.1, released a few months ago. Upon release, the game would not let you begin a game without a run-time error. Within the span of a few weaks, V6.1.5 came out, and the game was still unplayable. One of the Forum lords at the games's official Message board, who goes by the name of Bwob doesn't really seem to understand why we are outraged at the fact we coughed up $60 for a game we couldn't play weeks after its releace, which was allready delayed substantialy. He's quick to remind us of how hard the developers, heaven bless their hearts, are working to releace patches, and how we should be OK with that insead of whine and complain about how we coughed up 60 big-ones for a run-time error. He reminds me of my mother - "Instead of whining and complaning about what you don't have, be thankful for what you DO have". Get out of here. We're up to v6.1.15, and bugs are still there, but I can play the game for the most part. But all ye who travel to this game be warned - IF YOU HAVE NEVER PICKED UP A BUISSNESS STRATAGY GAME OR A "TYCOON" GAME, STAY FAR FAR AWAY!! This is not a fun game for those who wouldn't dream of one day being the CEO of a large airline, and all that that intails. If that does peak your interest, step right up. But don't be an Oliver Twist. Not in the forums. I haven't seen it posted anywhere, but I gather they have a "1 Complaint per person" rule there, and the moderators and admins make it known throughout that the devs don't read the forums, and expect us to e-mail the creators "With a zipped copy of the game you encountered the error in". I scoff at this, what with the abundance of ideas and suggestions that are there, just waiting to be picked up. And I won't take the time to find where I saved my game, zip it up and e-mail it to them when they can find out about the error from their message boards. So be prepared for glitches, bugs and assorted quips in the code - and a less-than-warm reception when you post about them in the forums.OVERALL THIS GAME IS FANTASTIC. The most complete buisness sim I've ever seen. Anybody with a crave for a tycoon game must look into this fine game. It's worth ever penny - all 6000 of them."-----That said, I might just check it out for those long and boring winter nights....Pat
December 18, 200520 yr Author Well, against all odds, I went ahead and bought "Airline 6". My expectations weren't really that high, because of the less than informative and professionally designed site, but after one day I feel already that it'll end up collecting dust on my HDD and I feel sorry for myself that I haven't invested the money in a good FS add-on.Airline 6 is indeed very complex with a ton of parameters to adjust and play around, but ultimately it is nothing, but a spreadsheet simulation of the type that you can find for $9.99 in the bargain bin of your local Walmart. It certainly is not worth $55 unless you're indeed a fan of numbers and calculations. Each turn represents one quarter, after which you're presented with endless sheets and financial numbers about your airline. If you're hoping for any pax or staff feedback, you'll be disappointed, because there's none.I will probably play around with it for a few more days, but it already left a little bitter taste in my mouth to have spent all that money on "Airliner 6". I could've gotten the PMDG 747 instead, which would have kept me busy and happy for months. Oh well... :-(Hope this helps,Pat
December 19, 200520 yr Sorry, I have only just noticed this thread, but If i had seen it earlier, I would have warned you about it. I had a free version of Airline 5 that came with Computer Pilot mag about 18 months ago. The concept is great, but the 'game' is crap. Unless you have a degree in accounting and love looking at endless spreadsheets, don't waste your time.I guess I was too late..... December 19, 200520 yr Author Yea *snip*. $55 out the window. If there was a return policy, I would have asked for my money back, although I am usually not that picky. It was one of those purchases where your sixth sense tells you to stay away, based on the overall presentation and lack of reviews, but you go: "What the ####, I try it anyway for those cold winter nights with little to do."I did do some research and found quite few enthousiats raving about it on airliners.net. I guess tastes vary and this was one case that I didn't agree with.Cheers.
