December 22, 200520 yr I was thinking about treating myself to an Alaska scenery for Christmas but the Georender site lists two sceneries. One is called Alaska Cinematic and the other Misty Fjords. Of the two, it seems cinematic needs more hd space although it only covers 11000 sq km vs 57000 sq km of the other one. Which is best and do they cover the same area? IS there a freeware download that is as good too? Thanks in advance for any replies and the best of the season to you all.
December 22, 200520 yr Alaska Cinematic is around Anchorage. Misty Fjords is, well, the Misty Fjords, Ketchikan and the surrounding area close to the British Columbia border.I only have Misty Fjords, and it's quite nice. Alaska Cinematic is probably the way to go if you want photoreal scenery.
December 22, 200520 yr Alaska Cinematic is the most incredible, realistic amazing to look at scenery Ive had BUT. It lasted 3 days on my computer. On MY SYSTEM and setup which is above average, loading times before flight and reloading scenery during flight due to blurries were just to much for me to deal with everyday. I also time accelarate which means everytime I go back to 1x, its reload the scenery again. I followed the advice and changed my fs9.cfg which helped alot, but of course effects the rest of the world. Those 15-30 second reloads here and there just ruined it for me.I now use ultimate terrain alaska/canada along with 38 mesh from fsgenesis. A really good combination but just be prepared for the occasional wierdness that meshes create like elevated runways, raised lakes ect.
December 22, 200520 yr Depends on what is important to you, Alaska Cinematic is a photoreal mountain area near Anchorage (I believe it has no modified airports only the defaults) Whereas Misty Fjords is a large part of SE Alaska that is redone based on actual data, reworked landclass and water, and also includes scenery enhancements, much more to do and see IMHO.Holgers follow up to it, Tongess Fjords, which will include the area above it will be out shortly, so that gives it even more value.Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://www.calvirair.com/mcpics/mcdcvabanner.jpgCalVirAir International Best, Michael KDFW
December 22, 200520 yr I had alot of AFCAD problems with PANC and PAMR and Alaska Cinematic, which they never fixed according to the forum on their web site. If you don't care about the large airports, it's great scenery. Misty Fjords is excellent and coupled with Ultimate Terrain, Alaska Canada, and you have some really nice scenery for thousands of miles.... Idf you want to see something that will blow your mind, get the FS Genesis 38.5 Mesh for that area.....
December 24, 200520 yr >If you want to see something that will>blow your mind, get the FS Genesis 38.5 Mesh for that>area.....Thanks guys. Just realised that I have 38 mesh with Abacus National Parks. I guess it doesnt get much better than that. Might wait for some good Alaska freeware.
December 25, 200520 yr Alaska Cinematic is the only payware scenery I have since I lived in Achorage for a year and a half. Lack of funds studying, I'll get Misty Fjords next time :) Anyway, after the shock of the initial load times I too discovered that changing planes or slewings requires an extra load. My graphics card is only 128 mgs, ram 256, don't know if that means anything? So if you use this scenery plan ahead and fly a small plane, any bushplane will do nicely, but no jets (except for approach and takeoff experience at the cost of those looong load times, kills immersion a bit). That said, it is a stunningly beautyful scenery, I imagine loading smaller portions at a time could possibly help but I don't know, haven't checked the forum at the site for a long time.Flying north to the canyon leading up to Hidden Lake completely overwhelmed me because of the longing in me for that part of the world. Caught some trout there. The same with the road to Kenai that leads to the glacier in the end of Turnagain Arm, forget it's name, I hear its retreating rapidly by the way, as with ice on the North Slope and the permafrost. And then down to Kenai Peninsula, found Quart Creek on the edge of the scenery, a bit early. Lotsa rivers and valleys and fjords and ice to fly over in photographic detail. Still, flying very close to the ground does reveal the pixels of the image, I believe the fs game only allows for so much texture resolution. All in all, it felt like being back, and it feels like a very cutting edge scenery addon - I've never seen anything quite like it. Not much autogen, though, which is a bit of a drawback. So, having only flown Holger's freeware scenery, I'd pick that for versatility. I'm likely to jump in and out of three aircraft and change weather and various other stuff before finally commiting to a flight, this is something you don't want to do with Cinematic. Misty Fjords doesn't use aireal photos but rather landclass, waterclass and vtp and lwm files, iow. landscape, rivers, roads, coastlines and so. Also mesh and textures and more. This kind of scenery is light on the frames since texture load is like default, except when using larger images, don't know about the specific scenery.Furthermore, this kind of scenery has a less defined border, when you approach the limits of AK Cinematic it looks like a checkerboard. So, those are two very different sceneries, I believe that both are top-notch, if you're looking for that extreme true-to-life look go AK Cinematic with all it's inherent drawbacks. Go Misty Fjords for a highly detailed (from maps and digital data) "default-style" scenery with a low framerate and load-time impact. Its also a lot bigger on area but also more expensive. Depends on what you're looking for, I think. I hope that helped and was fair to all!Merry x-mas,Dasher7
